I live around rednecks and have most of my life. Dean is like no redneck i've ever known. Reading Vonnegut for fun? Knowing every pop culture reference out there, including some very geeky/nerdy stuff? Totally crushing on Dr. Sexy? Yeah, no.

Dean is a secret and not so secret dork. Also, yeah, he's more a hyper-masculine, working man stereotype on the surface as opposed to a redneck stereotype.

Yup. I mean - he grew up in a household of men, doing the total 'knight in shining armor' kind of thing (saving people) and idealizing his dead mother. No, he's a tree-hugging hippy, but to say he's a conservative or a redneck is to really just...not get it at *all*.

Yeah, he's really not a redneck. I know rednecks and they would call Dean a wuss for his geekiness.

IAWTC! And I'm a Canadian, and not familiar with your American-- excuse me, USian ways, but yes, Dean definitely comes off as a semi-closeted geek.

HA - USian. That's so...weird.

He's a total geek. If he didn't have to stab demons in the face, he'd be *such* a nerd, playing WoW and LARPing and probably some kind of super-advanced Risk through the mail with people. Heh.

Yeah, Dean is about as far from "redneck" as you can get. He's just a stereotypical hyper-masculine "all-American" dude, closet geekiness included.

Yup.

And watching Oprah!

Oh right! And knowing what Anime is and thinking it's an *art form*. :)

IDK, my ex-gf's family are a bunch of self-identified redneck as fuck people who love science fiction/fantasy, pop culture, and the women are all into various forms of Wicca. Somewhat cognitive dissonancely (it's totally a word), they are also pro-life and conservative, the whole clan lives on a big chunk of land in a bunch of falling apart trailers, and most of the other things you'd associate with rednecks....

... but they also had 0 issue with my married gf introducing me to the family as her gf. Their reaction was "Well, we were wondering when you were going to tell us you liked girls". For the time I was with my ex-gf&bf, I was completely accepted as part of the family. (That relationship was all sorts of fucked up but V's family was awesome. They remain the only "in-laws" of any partner I've been with who have been completely accepting.)
