Akhal-Teke horses

[personal profile] cuteanimalpics 2013-10-17 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
  • The Akhal-Teke is a horse breed from Turkmenistan.
  • They are noted for speed and endurance.
  • The have a slim body, and are thought of sometimes as the horse version of the greyhound.
  • The breed is known for its endurance, as shown in 1935 when a group of Turkmen riders rode the 2500 miles from Ashgabat to Moscow in 84 days, including a three-day crossing of 235 miles of desert without water.
  • The breed may date back 3000 years, but precise ancestry is hard to trace.
  • Yes, these are the shiny gold horses you see floating around the internet. :)

These are one of my favorite breeds of horses. I keep hoping the Nez Pierce Appaloosa/Akhal-Teke crosses will show up where I can see them one day, because even the idea just sounds so amazing.

Their coats are beautiful, but I've never been able to get past their unusual conformation or their reputation for being difficult to handle.

If it helps, from what I've seen of them the reputation for being difficult is at least in part because they tend to be sort of..."My person/persons" horses, if that makes sense. And if to you aren't that person* then they're a bit harder to handle. But if you are their person? Then they're remarkably loyal animals.

*Again, from what I've heard they tend to be one person horses, though they occasionally bond with more than one.

That makes sense. Also, I will admit that part of my prejudice against them comes from being the owner of an Arabian horse. Arabian fans and Akhal-Teke fans have a bit of a rivalry, y'see. It's practically required.

I love that little silhouette on the belly. Looks like a snow lobster. :D

I can see that now that you've pointed it out! I was thinking it looked like some kind of spaceship.

Spaceship works, too; I think one of those 70's SF movies had a ship like that. Maybe Battle Beyond the Stars?
