Here's an idea: everyone who desires more platonic male friendship in fandom, sit down and write a gen fic for a pairing of your choice. Oh wait, you can't because you're too busy fangirling over that one slash ship that's totally the exception. Too bad everyone else has an exception and they're just as bad as you.

I'm aware fandom is overwhelmingly obsessed with shipping, but really, what have the people who keep asking for platonic stuff done lately to remedy this? It's your problem. Why wait around for others to come around? I mean, when someone ships a rare pairing that has no fanwork, they might, shocker, have to knuckle down and create it themselves. Go find minds who alike and start your own platonic fandom corner, because frankly, this holier-than-thou attitude is annoying as balls when it never seems to be accompanied by any proactive effort.

+1

I was in some fandoms for a while and I liked to write the close friendship gen stuff. I pretty much don't write any fanfiction at all because I was tired of being "side-eyed" for apparently being a bad person for not shipping them (or only writing really close friendship, or whatever).

The thing is, I now write some gay fiction (original), but for me I just totally loved (and at the time, NEEDED) the close friendship stories. I just got so tired of feeling like I always had to explain or justify myself or got laughed at for not wanting to ship my guys.

So, no. I'm not writing more right now. Deal.
