I've only ever known of one woman gamer like that and I never actually met her. I only heard stories of her after she left the game. To me they feel like an almost extinct species. I know they exist but I'm still surprised any time people mention them and have a huge pile of doubt that such a creature was actually seen.

As for your problem, I can understand why this is a secret because you have a stronger emotional reaction to the more benign thing. See, the bigotry is actually hurtful while the girl begging is just annoying. I actually almost wondered for a moment if you were trying to be a troll. It's possible but I'm willing to give you the benefit of a doubt. Because of that I'm going to tell you to get your priorities straight, seriously.

I don't mean this in any insulting way, but the first paragraph is really naive. Have you played many big MMOs? In active, social guilds? You will find them almost everywhere. Maybe not many of them, but at least a few, and everybody will know their name and what they are.

And dude wtf. This has nothing to do with OP's priorities. Just because OP is used to a certain kind of bigot doesn't mean they think that bigot is better or less hurtful than another kind, it just means they're used to dealing with it. Call me lgbt slurs all you like, I'm used to that, but insult my race and it's my sore spot, that doesn't mean I think homophobes are better than racists. Maybe you should look at stopping your own snap judgments first.

"I don't mean to sound insulting" but you then insulted me. Look, just insult me and get it over with.

Yes. I have. I've played WoW, RO, and dabbled in a lot of Korean MMOs. Thanks for questioning my gaming.

Also I never said I thought they weren't real? I only acknowledged that I, personally never come across them so they seem a lot rarer than they apparently are. Also, I sometimes doubt people's claims sometimes because, guess what, I know a lot of sexist assholes so sometimes I can't tell if the girl really was a loser or if they're just being sexist.

I said the bigots were more hurtful than annoying players begging for gear. They are. Maybe you should gain reading comprehension.

I meant the naive part wasn't supposed to be insulting, and it wasn't supposed to be. I find it hard to believe you've never run into a "gamer girl" like this because while they're not as common as people like to get mad about, they're hardly rare enough to be entirely avoided in my experience.

Besides, if you get to doubt me, I get to doubt you, that's only fair.

Bigots are more hurtful but I see nothing from OP suggesting they are not. Pet peeves exist. Rage buttons exist. Rage level doesn't say anything about OP's priorities. Maybe they're so sick of bigots there's no reaction any more.

Well it was. Lucky you. :/

Doubt me all you like? I don't care? I made a small comment that I had such a different experience when I played MMOs. It wasn't a statement that I think they don't exist blah, blah, blah. So I don't see why we have a problem. We have different gaming experiences. End of story, no?

I get that and I think if something like that is making you rage and essentially care so much maybe you need to do something about it? Maybe it's just me but when I realize I'm getting mad over something incredibly stupid (Which happens 'cause let's just admit I can have a short fuse.) I try to change that? It makes me feel shame to put that much emotion and effort and caring into something trivial that I don't like. So I try to change my priorities and not care about it. Am I the only one who does this?

Also I want to apologize about the reading comprehension jibe. That was low of me and hypocritical.

Not everyone can do that is the thing, which is why I was pointing out that the rage = priorities thing shouldn't be a logical jump to make.

And you could have ended at "I've never seen one" without adding that you have a huge pile of doubt, which insinuates you believe everyone else in the thread is lying with their anecdotes. Which maybe you do, idk.

Considering I can only come from my own experience it seemed pretty logical to me. I think the problem is that we don't know what the OP can or can't do or if they've even attempted to get over it. Also, even if you can't do that isn't it something you're still making a priority? (I'm sincerely asking this because now I'm kinda fascinated.)

Eh, I was trying to be brief and didn't think people who get upset about it. Also, if I hadn't I wouldn't have been able to have this conversation with you. But if you really want the long ass explanation I doubt the people I used to play with because most were sexist assholes. Not all of them were, though, and I would trust them if they told me something like that. As for people I don't know, I don't doubt them like I would the sexist assholes but I'm much more likely to "wait and see" rather than just take them at their word. As for me doubting people in this thread, depends on how well I know the person, really. Trust in what someone has to say, whatever the topic is, is something that, for me, is always highly dependent on our previous interactions.

But that's long as fuck and not completely relevant to the secret. It's also really self-involved so I left it out.

The anon just left? Why? Like, the moment I calm down and want to talk they skedaddle. I almost feel like they were just here to insult me and then leave.

I hope you come back, whoever you are, because I'd still like to talk about this.

Hello fellow anon

(Anonymous) 2013-10-19 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
Just poking my head in to say that one, you are being insulting. And two, yes I've played MMOs and been in active guilds and active in the community and have yet to run into any of these types of players.

While of course there are always people in chat asking for free money or items, they've always been ignored as general trolls. I've never seen anyone try this whole "I'm a girl give me stuff!" routine that you and OP are talking about.

I've seen it once in trade chat on WoW and even then I'm not entirely sure they weren't just trolling(and therefore unsure that they were a girl). But I play on the EU servers so I don't know if it happens more often on the US ones.

I've run into a few, but I can count them on one hand. Actually, I can only think of two. And that's in about 5yrs of raiding in various guilds. (In WoW.)

At least I'm not alone in my experiences then. I was starting to think I was a rare anomaly.

Nope. And I have to say, the behavior bothered me a lot, but the sexism/misogyny/etc bothers me a lot more, and that's WAY more common. The "guild princesses"? If I'm in a good guild, will get booted. If people are going along with the BS, I know it's not a guild for me. Whereas the misogyny/etc, I risk every time I step in a dungeon, and sometimes even just wandering around cities and questing, to the point that except for the holiday boss (I want the damn HH mount) and my AHing, I have pretty much entirely stopped playing.

I've gone back to playing GW2 because my gf and her family went back to it since they are saving for a cross country move (out my way! yay!) and HOLY SHIT the difference is amazing. I hadn't realized how much anxiety I was carrying just from playing WoW with all these misogynistic shitheads, even on a "good" server (WRA).

Yeah, I get where you're coming from. There are reasons I talk about my MMO play in the past-tense.

Huh, well I'm glad you've finally found something that works for you.

Should you ever be interested in checking out GW2, Tarnished Coast is the server I'm on, and it's pretty awesome. They periodically do free weekends or weeks. (It can take some finangling to actually get on the server because it's frequently full, but that's because it's the fan designated RP server, the only one. It's got a very different culture; something that you can do in GW2 is "guest" on other servers, and we usually can tell when someone's guesting, because it's the only time you see the type of garbage rampant in most MMOs. And man, do they get whomped on and reported -- and Anet is somewhat unique in that they actually do ban people. They did a Reddit thread when the game first came out where people who publicly asked why they got banned would get answers. They would quote what the people had said, or the names they had, and be completely fucking owned. It's awesome.)

The gameplay is great, too, and it's sorta free to play. You have to buy the game up front but you don't have a sub. There are microtransactions but! you can convert in-game gold to "gems" (the cash shop currency) and get whatever you like. My aforementioned gf who has had to quit WoW because of budget has gotten lots of things off the cash shop, from character slots to in-game items, just from farming for gold.

*shuts up*

That sounds absolutely fantastic. However I just don't play MMOs anymore. I play solo or with a small group of friends on games I already own. I've found MMOs just... don't make me happy. I get too much anxiety over it. I'm sorry.

But thank you for the recommendation. I have a few friends who are still into MMOs but are having trouble with the communities. I'll recommend it to them. Again, thank you.

[personal profile] elialshadowpine 2013-10-19 03:30 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a little different than standard MMOs, in that you don't have to group up, and you can easily play it as a solo game (or with friends; if you ever should want to try it, poke me on here and I'd be more than happy to invite you to my guild); unlike most MMOs, which encourage competition, GW2 encourages cooperation. Everything is shared, gathering nodes included. It's hard to explain, but it's very different.

I do understand the anxiety problem though, and sympathize. I mostly quit WoW because of anxiety issues just logging in (I even get nasty tells on my bank alt, up to and including death threats), and the niceness of GW2, or at least my server, keeps me playing. I've never had an unkind word said to me in that game and I cannot say it for any other online game I've played. But you do what you need to to keep your anxiety controlled; I am well too familiar with that particular can of worms. <3

You are not alone in this. I'm part for more than a year of a casual guild and I have yet to know a "gamer girl".

And statistically, my guild has a very balanced male/female ratio and our most helpful and best players are females who don't nail in the fact they are girls. Fun fact! a lot of us, male and female, has been miss-gendered at one point or the other hahah.
