I hate "gamer girls". Not girls who are gamers but "gamer girls". And contrary to what people say, they DO exist.

I am a woman and I play games. I was an officers and eventually guild master of a fairly large guild in WoW for 4 years. I have dealt with "gamer girls". They are some of the worst players to have to deal with. They are entitled, they try to use being a girl to get them things, some will flirt incessantly with male members (even when asked not to), and they constantly have to bring up they are a girl.

If a female player is constantly drawing attention to the fact that she is a girl, I generally assume they are a "gamer girl". Fortunately, they are the minority.

I've only ever known of one woman gamer like that and I never actually met her. I only heard stories of her after she left the game. To me they feel like an almost extinct species. I know they exist but I'm still surprised any time people mention them and have a huge pile of doubt that such a creature was actually seen.

As for your problem, I can understand why this is a secret because you have a stronger emotional reaction to the more benign thing. See, the bigotry is actually hurtful while the girl begging is just annoying. I actually almost wondered for a moment if you were trying to be a troll. It's possible but I'm willing to give you the benefit of a doubt. Because of that I'm going to tell you to get your priorities straight, seriously.

I'm a female [casual] gamer. Not only have I never pulled any of that shit, I hate women who do things like that in the name of "feminism," because I feel it makes it five times more difficult for those of us who want to be judged on our skill.

My knee-jerk reaction to this is to get offended and angry. But then I sat back and read the comments and I guess I've just got to say that I've been lucky to be a gamer all my life (since our family got our first computer back in the 80s) and have never run into any of these "gamer girls" you talk about. I've been in college gaming groups, several Betas, MMOs and seriously never run into stuff like this.

What I *have* run into is dudes trying to give you "advice" and free gear without being prompted as soon as they find out you're a woman. And no, I don't just go around telling people I'm female but it does come up in conversations.

But I guess you and I have just had very different gaming experiences.

I was accused of being the 'guild princess' (in a very negative way) no matter what I did. I would organize my own heroics, I got my own gear, I rarely asked for help and when I did, I always made sure to pay the players/guild back or paid it forward with new guildies. I never traded on my gender, I never flirted with guild members.

And I was still slapped with this tag.

You know what's even worse than entitled asshats? Being mistaken for one of them. Yes, I am a female bodied person playing a video game. No, I really do just want to tank this raid and joke around with my fellow gamers. No, I don't want your stupid gold, or priority on the loot drops, or any pampering other than the usual excessive heals (if your tank dies, you all die, losers).

My old LotRO guild was about half and half male and female. We had two "gamer girl" amongst maybe fifty women and girls who played. The two of them wrought so much havoc and devastation that eventually the guild got all factious and splintery, and now now I'm in a guild that's got about a dozen men and two dozen women and everyone is nice and friendly and it's pretty great.

The "gamer girl" exists and she does more to how women are perceived in MMOs than a hundred good and kind and polite women ever could.

Honestly, I haven't come across any girls like this, but I'm not going to doubt that they exist.

But if we're going to talk about the type of girl that pisses me off to no end when it comes to gaming, I'd like to bring up the girl who doesn't allow other girls to be part of her group. Who thinks she's a super special snowflake for getting into the boys' club and immediately excludes and takes part in the ridicule of any other new girls who want to join. To me, they are the worst. It's hard enough being a girl in gaming fandom; it gets even harder when other girls don't want you to be in fandom too.

Hm, yeah, it's hard to not side-eye this, but we all have different experiences. Yes, the "gamer girl" types (I've seen a few of them briefly) do piss me off, but it's mostly because they make it harder for women to gain acceptance and respect in the gaming community; that in turn is in good part because of men who can't distinguish them from other players who happen to be female. And there's this lose-lose where if you say you're a woman, you get called a "gamer girl" or ridiculed, and if you don't, people assume you're a man (this is why I make a point of always listing my gender on profiles and correcting people who misgender me, because that assumption is so stupid) and then say "women never game! I've never seen one!"

Anyway though it's annoying for that reason, the main reason it's annoying is still because of the male reaction to it (disproportionate to other annoying types of gamers and used to justify sexism), and overall actual sexism and overt abuse (and not just misogyny, there are many forms of bigotry online, like you mentioned) are a much bigger problem and they make me much more angry.

That said, I recognize that we all have different experiences. That was my first impression upon reading the secret, but I can also understand how this may be more personal to you while the other kinds of bad behavior are (sadly) very normalized. I don't really know. The comments have a lot of interesting points of view on this as well.

I've never played MMOs, just FPS games, and I have literally never in well over a decade of playing multiplayer encountered any of the people you describe.

Women playing the game being singled out for threats and harassment, on the other hand? Oh boy yeah, metric shittons of that. "Just let me take the best camping spot and all the easy kills, sweetie" "ok I'm going for the flag now you all have to protect me, tee hee~~" "do any of you cute guys wanna buy me an new emblem mine is soooo uncool" ...does not happen. Ever. This behaviour simply does not exist. That would get said gamer such a deluge of rape and murder threats and stalking it would be fucking mind-blowing. Just being overtly female and using a mic garners you so much seething hate.

I know two people who do this. Neither are girls, or even going through tiniest gender identity questioning. They flat out said that they do it because they like the freebies and attention. One of them was utterly surprised that I hide my gender in gaming because I hate everything that they crave.

Oh yes, 0.01% of female gamers do this. So do 0.01% of male gamers. But it's only that tiny percentage of female ones that get absolute shit for it. It's only women who ever get targeted as being that kind of gamer.
