It may come from a sense of betrayal? Like it'd make me angrier to be called an ethnic slur by a non-white person because they should know what it's like, and they're just reinforcing the thing we all suffer from

(Anonymous) 2013-10-18 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that's what I got. OP is a female gamer who is raging at other female gamers who are reinforcing the sexist male view of women who play games.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-19 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
I agree.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-19 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
women don't reinforce the stereotype, assholes who assume every girl is like that without evidence do.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-19 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
This!

Gamer bigots don't enforce the stereotype that all gamers are bigots, assholes who assume every gamer is like that without evidence do.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-19 05:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Nobody in this thread is doing that, but nice try.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-19 07:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Advocatus Diaboli. If you take the "enforcing stereotypes is not based on stupid behaviour of parts of the group in question but on those who believe in the stereotypes" argument, it can be used for every group.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-19 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
O-kay I agree with you. But since most people ITT are gamers and nobody has suggested that all gamers are bigots, only that there is a tiny minority of toxic people of both genders... why bring it up?

(Anonymous) 2013-10-19 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
I understand that. I just have different priorities. Why get more angry at girl gamers when it's not their fault that people stereotype you're entire gender based on shitty behaviour, especially when you're acknowledging that that level of shitty behaviour has been normalized for years. By male gamers.

Probably because a lot of those stereotypes are being broken now, especially in mmos? Like the existence of people like the poster described give the sexist men something to point to and use as proof of their outdated beliefs and deny they're outdated.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-19 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
I'd still get more angry at the sexist men for trying to justify harmful and idiotic beliefs.
OP is venting though. I get it. Their feelings aren't "wrong" or anything.

This. I hate the fact that women are supposed to earn the same kind of respect men are apparently born with. The 'don't give them a reason' approach is more insidious and way more dangerous than straight out back-to-the-kitchen sexism, imo.

insidious and depressing :\
