They're annoying, but if you genuinely think they're worse than racists, sexists, and homophobes, fuck you.

Being angry =/= thinking something is morally worse, it just means you are angry.

OP probably meant a pet peeve and you're going off the deep end.

OP said "nothing make me rage like", which is pretty telling even if they wouldn't argue that one is, rationally speaking, worse than the other. Priorities and things.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-18 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Right, and the point I'm making is that what pisses you off, is not always what you consider the worst thing morally. For example, incompetent coworkers make me "rage" more than anything else in the world, but I'm not going to say that they are worse than racism. I don't get "ragey" about racism. I get serious.

Jumping to conclusions about OP's priorities based on what makes them "rage" is dumb

I think that might be poor wording. I can't speak for the OP, but I personally read it more as "all of the above are so bad, I just can't with them, but this is something I can with and allow myself to be angry at"

If that's the case, I get it. There are a lot of things I have to avoid, but just because I let myself be upset at other things that are less worse, doesn't mean I think they're actually more worse. They're just easier to cope with because they aren't as bad.

Which is why I prefaced my statement with "if you genuinely think". If they don't, good.

In that case most of the people complaining about *isms in fandom ought to spend more time openly raging about things like genocide, slavery, forced prostitution, and other bona-fide full-on human rights violations than they do about fanfic writers not featuring enough characters from group X.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-19 02:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Have any of those people ever said that the fandom stuff is worse?

You can care about small things and still care about large things at the same time, you know.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-19 07:35 pm (UTC)(link)
My point is that people's level of anger about things often doesn't reflect their actual severity. If you're going to condemn somebody for feeling more annoyed about more minor things (annoying girl gamers with entitlement issues) than more major things (homophobia, racism, ect.) - as the person that I replied to does - then you need to accept that this means that people have a moral obligation to demonstrate a greater amount of vocal outrage over serious human rights abuses (evil violations that destroy millions of human beings) than they do issues of representation in fanfic (certainly not on a par with murder, rape, or slavery).

(Anonymous) 2013-10-18 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
OP didn't say that. Just said they're his particular "hot button."

(Anonymous) 2013-10-18 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
It's more likely OP is female, just pointing that out. A whole lot of female players don't mention their gender and get assumed to be men.

Especially if you play with a male avatar. People constantly think I'm a guy because my avatar is male and my handle is gender-neutral.

SA

I did hesitate in using the male pronoun - I should have left my reference to OP ungendered.

Hell, I have made specific mentions of my gender and still had people assume I was male! I mean, I suppose mentioning of menstrual bleeding isn't necessarily proof someone is female, but I'm pretty damned sure they weren't considering trans people. I still remember the "OMG, Vera's a GIRL?" the first time I got on TS. (They were perfectly nice and accepting! Just, totally shocked that apparently, yes, women swear and some of us like ladies too and will totally get in on the hot celebrity discussions...)

Being misgendered is one of my big pet peeves x___x and that includes people generally assuming that Anonymous Internet Person is male because male is default. I don't pull any of the GAMER GRRRRL shit but if someone uses the wrong pronoun with me I will sure as hell correct them. (Hopefully it will not be a big deal - they're say "oh sorry" and we'll move on. That's usually what happens.)

Mine, too. It's the only time it's happened within guild, and I really don't know how that particular guy managed to miss it because we talked fairly frequently. It doesn't help that the classes I tend to play aren't ones that were stereotypically female. That guild was about half women but probably 2/3 of the women played healers. I was one of the few who was DPS/tank, and have been a tank almost entirely since early Wrath.

So, if I'm doing LFD or whatnot, I'm almost always assumed to be male, because I'm the tank! Despite that in... *thinks*... every raid group I've been in since ICC has had only women tanks. (It wasn't planned that way, it just happened.) But tanks are guys, don'tcha know? SIGH.

(If the group in LFD has been absolutely silent, or has been dick-ish but not to the point that I would drop, I usually keep my mouth shut at the assumption. If they've been talkative and nice (which I only seem to ever see happen if I have people from my own server in LFD) then I correct them, and it almost always goes okay. If otherwise, though, there's unfortunately a good chance of prickishness, which I just don't want to deal with.)

Yeah - different response types. I'm the kind of person who will bull my way through any conflict because it's really important to me that people do not have the wrong idea. Male-default mindsets are annoying and dumb and both contribute to and result from sexism in gaming. But then I am definitely not the conflict-avoidant type at all. In fact I can be really pushy sometimes... :s

Basically, I'll risk the prickishness. If it ends up being so horrible I can't deal with it, well, then I didn't really want to play with them anyway. But that's usually not what happens.

So something you encounter every day can't make you more annoyed than something you only encounter occasionally? Sorry, but human nature is such that minor things can piece you off just as much big things.

Also? Famine is much worse than all those things you cited. How dare you care about sexists when people around the world are starving! /s
