Hm, yeah, it's hard to not side-eye this, but we all have different experiences. Yes, the "gamer girl" types (I've seen a few of them briefly) do piss me off, but it's mostly because they make it harder for women to gain acceptance and respect in the gaming community; that in turn is in good part because of men who can't distinguish them from other players who happen to be female. And there's this lose-lose where if you say you're a woman, you get called a "gamer girl" or ridiculed, and if you don't, people assume you're a man (this is why I make a point of always listing my gender on profiles and correcting people who misgender me, because that assumption is so stupid) and then say "women never game! I've never seen one!"

Anyway though it's annoying for that reason, the main reason it's annoying is still because of the male reaction to it (disproportionate to other annoying types of gamers and used to justify sexism), and overall actual sexism and overt abuse (and not just misogyny, there are many forms of bigotry online, like you mentioned) are a much bigger problem and they make me much more angry.

That said, I recognize that we all have different experiences. That was my first impression upon reading the secret, but I can also understand how this may be more personal to you while the other kinds of bad behavior are (sadly) very normalized. I don't really know. The comments have a lot of interesting points of view on this as well.

TBF though, it's not women's responsibility to work on constantly convincing men that yes indeed, that 51% of the human earthling population does have the capacity to be a bunch of different kinds of people. I don't think gamer girls help in that respect, but they're probably not hurting it all that much either.

I mean let's be real, if you're prepared to believe that all vagina-havers are a brainless hivemind, so much so that it's every new girl's job to convince you otherwise while you sneer at them with your arms crossed like a misogynistic genie, you were already sexist and looking for something to support your bias, no matter how flimsy.

I kind of agree with you though. It's really shitty, because I find myself thinking "stop making us look bad!" at people like gamer girls even though I know that even expecting everyone of a minority to be a perfect ambassador for their group is a result of bigotry. life is hard

Yeah, you're definitely right. I think this whole thread is making me think about that angle a lot more.

I just know when girls/women, especially in spaces where there are very few female players compared to the number of male ones, start acting like that I cringe because the reality is the really immature guys WILL hold them up as an example of why women are all ~stoopid and ~know nothing about games and ~obnoxious to play with.

But you are absolutely right. It's the attitude of those guys who are the ultimate problem when it comes to sexist behavior, not the behavior of the gamer girls (even if they're being annoying in general to everybody, because there are a lot of annoying people who play games).
