I'm way behind on HoO, but this makes me happy. Please tell me it's handled well?

It is. But...it's heartbreaking. Everyone aside from Jason thinks that Nico loves Annabeth, when he actually is in love with Percy. Nico thinks that he has to disappear forever once they save Percy and Annabeth, and it's just really sad. Nico sort of hates that he's gay, but Jason keeps telling him that it's not a bad thing, and that's just who he is. I hope he finds someone who will love him back eventually. :(

Aww poor Nico. I've always been really fond of his character.

It makes me really happy that the editors didn't put their foot down and allowed it in though. I have a feeling that, even just a few years ago they would have said no.
