Anon, you are so not alone in that. If I hadn't seen that photoset about the (LIVING) director making skeptical faces at TIFF, I would still be thinking he was that guy on the left.

Ah anon, I love Steve McQueen the director (he works with my favorite actor a lot so duh), but I still sometimes get confused when I want to google search him (I grew up watching old Steve McQueen movies with my dad).

The first time I noticed a recent movie was directed by Steve McQueen I did a double take because I was sure he was dead, I wouldn't be surprised if you weren't the only person to think they were one and the same.

...You mean there is not a Steve McQueen fashion designer? Damn this popular name.

Isn't it Alexander McQueen? I hope it's not Steve McQueen (#3) as having two of them is confusing enough.

That's Alexander McQueen. Who is also dead so he won't be directing anything any time soon.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-19 08:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I love how you formatted this secret.

That's how I am with Spike Lee and Spike Jonze. I know they have different last names, but for some reason I thought Spike Lee was Spike Jonze for the longest time. I just heard Spike and automatically my brain put Spike Lee's picture in my head. I thought Spike Lee had made Being John Malkovich.

Obviously, they are totally different people.

... You made me realize I'm probably confusing both. Oops.

Me too! I'd heard of 12 yrs a slave, but thought the Steve McQueen they were talking about with regard to it was #1 b/c that's the only one I'd ever heard of. Thank you. Now I know my Steves.

I do wonder now how many people are confused, though, at least here in the US. He probably doesn't have that problem in Britain where #1 might not have been as famous as he was here.

I found out yesterday that NuMcQueen* is British. I had no idea until this very moment that he's black. I'm excited for all of these Black Brits in the media lately. At the same time I now see them as competition for Black Americans... and they are beating us handily. Hell, I think we deserve it. Who do we have? Shonda Rhimes can't do everything. And Tyler Perry? FUCK HIM.

*That's his official name now. The old Steve McQueen is now OGMcQueen.

lol this hilarious secret made my afternoon

(Anonymous) 2013-10-19 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
And this is why in Hollywood two actors can not have the same name if they are in the Actor's Guild. (The second person with the same to name to register has to change their name. Which is why, for example, Michael Keaton, who was born Michael Douglas, had to change his name because there was already a Michael Douglas in the guild.) I wish they would do the same thing for all the Hollywood guilds. Because how hard would it be for the director to go by Stephen McQueen instead of Steve McQueen?

If we're all going to tell our favorite famous name mixup stories, I should mention that for the longest time I thought that David LaChapelle was the name Dave Chappelle used for his side career in photography.

I've got something more embarrassing: I kept referring to Alexander McQueen as Steve McQueen for a time.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-20 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I feel like an idiot. I thought he was dead, saw that there was a movie coming out directed by Steve McQueen and went, "Oh, I guess he isn't dead."

It did not even occur to me that they were two different people. *facepalm*
