a) That's an awesome picture. Holmes looks so gleeful and Watson looks so swashbuckly and adventurous. :D

b) Who's to say they didn't? Watson might have just not been able to publish his accounts because they might get, y'know, in trouble for it. Actually, I'm not quite sure how he got away with publishing Charles Augustus Milverton at all. How long was the statute of limitations on breaking and entering, larceny, and obstruction of justice?

I have a headcanon where the Giant Rat of Sumatra can't be published because it involves Holmes smuggling illegal animals around the world. For the greater good, of course, but Watson is totally covering for him.

Giant Rat of Sumatra theories, IMO, are hardest because of Holmes' "for which the world is not yet ready" comment. The fuck is that supposed to imply? Not ready for what? Aaagh! I somehow suspect it was a much larger story that Mycroft put the kibosh on telling anyone about, so instead Holmes and Watson just drop lurid details about it in front of random people just to be dicks.
