IDK. On the one hand, that's funny and badass. On the other hand, it has always made me uncomfortable to see Holmes and Watson do something illegal (and I would've been more uncomfortable still if they had seriously violated the law; there's this "becoming criminals to fight criminals" motif... it should be administered carefully, I feel, when it comes to the Sherlock Holmes franchise).

In any event, if you mean "illegal" as in "stealing things and breaking into houses", I would be glad to see more of that, though perhaps in a canonical adaptation rather than in the canon. As to the more serious offenses, I think there is a distinct bound they shan't overstep.

Especially s. 11 of the Criminal Law Amendment Act, 1885...

Heh. Nice.

And the detective becomes the criminal. I am sure there is some dark thief Sherlock fic out there somewhere.

Out of curiosity, OP, have you read E.W. Hornung's Raffles series? Written by ACD's brother-in-law, no less, it has a Holmes and Watson-esque dynamic, except illegal activities! (To wit: Victorian-era gentleman thief burgles people with the help of his chronicler/beleaguered sidekick who is aware of said thief's audacity and general jerkitude yet cannot help but assist.)

It's all on Project Gutenberg if you're curious. And if you are familiar with it, OP, my apologies for reiterating what you already know :)

It's the second time today I see Hornung mentioned in a Sherlock Holmes-related conversation. I think I'll go and read the hell out of his works now; he sounds awesome.

My first thought was of the Raffles series. I didn't know he was ACD's brother-in-law though.

I used to love the Raffles TV series.

I was just coming to say this. If you want a criminal Holmes equivalent, Raffles is the way to go. Though Raffles always struck me as much more cruel than Holmes.

Alternately, Leblanc's Arsene Lupin, although he lacks a Watson, and includes a blatant and at the time illegal crossover with Holmes himself (The Hollow Needle). I've always had a soft spot for his Lestrade equivalent, though. Ganimard is so much fun.

Raffles is much more cruel - Raffles/Bunny is my forever OTP, partly because it is so unhealthy.

One of my favorite things about Yuletide is that there are usually new Raffles fics. I think I've requested Raffles for 5 out of 6 Yuletides and never been matched on it. Probably won't get matched on it this year either, which is good because my Yuletide letter is bad and uninspirational.

a) That's an awesome picture. Holmes looks so gleeful and Watson looks so swashbuckly and adventurous. :D

b) Who's to say they didn't? Watson might have just not been able to publish his accounts because they might get, y'know, in trouble for it. Actually, I'm not quite sure how he got away with publishing Charles Augustus Milverton at all. How long was the statute of limitations on breaking and entering, larceny, and obstruction of justice?

I second both ^^

I have a headcanon where the Giant Rat of Sumatra can't be published because it involves Holmes smuggling illegal animals around the world. For the greater good, of course, but Watson is totally covering for him.

But they already do tons of illegal shit. Haven't they, like, let about a dozen different people who committed a crime go free because they felt the crime was justified? It's not as badass as breaking into people's houses, granted...

(Anonymous) 2013-10-19 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
What kinds of illegal shit, specifically? Stuff like in CHAS is one thing, but I can never really stand those heroes who constantly do illegal things because society's laws are too dumb and inconvenient/are below them. *cough* House *cough*

(Anonymous) 2013-10-19 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
For some reason, Holmes' "I would've totally made for a really accomplished criminal" comment in that story always struck me as a tad ominous. Are you covering up for him, Watson? *side-eyes*

Actually, I think I once read an AU fic where Holmes never met Watson and without his influence eventually became a serial criminal baiting the police with impossibly opaque crimes out of sheer boredom.

I actually kind of love the part in The Sign of the Four when they sit around waiting for warrants.

You needed to use profanity to make this secret? Getting sick of the random, routine use of what should be saved for special situations.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-20 05:40 am (UTC)(link)
I forgot how sacred profanity is

(Anonymous) 2013-10-20 05:40 am (UTC)(link)
Well, get the fuck over it, I guess.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-20 06:37 am (UTC)(link)
"Shit" is not profanity, which is, as the word implies, making sacred things (such as the name of G*d) commonplace or defiled by using them out of context. "Shit" is vulgarity. Different thing. Unless you worship shit of course, in which case you may have a point.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-20 05:27 am (UTC)(link)
Illegal shit? Like pooping on someone elses front lawn? Heroin laced feces? What?

(Anonymous) 2013-10-20 06:09 am (UTC)(link)
...Have you tried Psych?
