As long as somebody read and enjoyed my fic, I'm content. If they feel good enough about it to comment, that's just gravy and I don't expect deep insight and eloquence. But I have received some great reviews on FFN over the years and once you consider the ratio and overall number, I don't actually think it compares infavorably to AO3.

Actually, back in the days of LJ, that was where all the best comments came from. A single comment can turn into a thread which can turn into a full-blown discussion.

That happens on AO3 sometimes too - less often, though. :/

Way less. I imagine it's because people are kind ambivalent over whether it's a straight up archive like FFN, where there's little discussion outside the forums, or some web journal hybrid. It can be confusing to figure out what the right etiquette is.
