Yeah, I agree. Most of the ffn reviews weird the hell out of me. Granted, there are plenty of idiotic reviews on AO3, too, but I rarely encounter anything quite as creepy and pointless as the usual ffn stuff.

I love getting the alert that I have a review, but then I get sad/intimidated when it turns out to be "this was great, now write one where they do this or this!" Um...thanks?

Every. Fucking. Time.

Which is why I haven't posted fic there in ages. So freaking entitled. They've barely thanked you for writing the one they just read and they're already demanding that you write another.

Most of the reviews I get there are, "I liked this." I take what I can get.

Oh MAN the ones where they tell you their preferences. "I think the pairing is unnecessary, but your fic was okay anyway" and "It would have been better if X was shipped with Y instead of Z"... SO YOU WRITE THAT FIC THAT YOU WOULD LIKE BETTER THAN MINE, THEN. For crying out loud.

And then there was the time when for months, every single story I posted there got the same review from the same person, which was like "This is not a review for [name of story], this is a request that you continue [name of other story I posted months ago] and tell what happened next!" Even though the other story was FINISHED, the person leaving the review was apparently just too obtuse to discern that the way it ended was THERE WAS NO WAY OUT AND EVERYONE DIED.

ff.net reviews are largely terrible. :P I have gotten a few along those lines on AO3 too, but not nearly so many, and I'm honestly happy with kudos because they mean that people DON'T leave utterly useless comments if they don't have something useful to say. (Which is perfectly fine. I know I rarely have anything useful to say either.)

I've actually not seen much of a difference between the reviews I get on ff.net and the ones I get at AO3. Yeah, I get more "Yay, I liked this :D" reviews at ff.net but I also get more reviews period at ff.net, so it all evens out. There's not really much difference between a review like that and getting kudos, and neither one annoys me. (And actually a couple of my more recent fics got some really nice multi-paragraph reviews on ff.net, so they do exist.) And I don't get why some people get so annoyed at getting a lot of reviews that just say "I liked it." I think it's nice that they left a review at all, I'm not going to get upset because the review didn't live up to my standards or whatever, my reviewers don't owe me a power point presentation on why they liked my fic.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-20 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I have never minded a review that just said something like "I liked it" or "this was nice." They make me smile, knowing someone liked what I wrote. My problem is always the entitled jerks who tell me they liked it and now I need to write more and it should be about this. Or the ones who say "Why would you ever pair them?!" Like, dude, why did you click on it if it wasn't your cup of tea?

The reviews in both places have been pretty much the same, the only difference is that on ff.net I get PMs asking about sequels, which I do not mind at all.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-20 09:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I've gotten some painfully stupid reviews on ff.net, but also a number of really lovely, thoughtful ones. Whereas on AO3 I get...total silence. Kudos and bookmarks, sure, but nobody in my fandom seems to actually speak to one another.

^This :/

(Anonymous) 2013-10-20 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, this is my experience too and one of the reasons why I prefer ffnet to AO3. I also haven't gotten many of the stupid/entitled reviews that people are complaining about on ffnet (I think I received *one* review *once* asking "Pls write one with [this pairing] next pls!") so maybe it's a fandom thing? My fandoms are pretty small and I avoid the popular ones like the plague....

I've had so many incredible conversations on ff.net because I get some wonderfully thoughtful reviews. That, to me, makes posting there worth it.

It's very different for me. Most of my FFnet reviews are thoughtful, and even the short ones aren't annoying and/or written in textspeak. Some of them were so nice I saved them to read when I feel down.

On AO3? No reviews whatsoever.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-20 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
As long as somebody read and enjoyed my fic, I'm content. If they feel good enough about it to comment, that's just gravy and I don't expect deep insight and eloquence. But I have received some great reviews on FFN over the years and once you consider the ratio and overall number, I don't actually think it compares infavorably to AO3.

Actually, back in the days of LJ, that was where all the best comments came from. A single comment can turn into a thread which can turn into a full-blown discussion.

It is really wierd to see ff.net desribed as fanfiction

I cross post and I haven't found the quality of review from AO3 to be any higher or lower than the ones I get from ff.net. Generally just variations on "I liked this" (which I don't mind at all).

But the fandoms I write for tend not to be the super popular ones.

I've had a LOT of fantastic, thoughtful reviews on FF.net and made lasting fandom friendships through talking about fic. If I'd started on AO3 first, I wouldn't have any of that, because no one leaves comments on my AO3 fics. Sure, there's the occasional cringey review on FF.net, but in my opinion, it's worth it.

Or maybe it just depends on the fandom. I've gotten a lot of really fantastic reviews on fanfiction.net. Reviews like the ones you're mentioning are something I only get once in a blue moon now. Frankly they just kind of amuse me.

AO3 is almost total silence. I've gotten a few reviews there, but they're of no higher quality than the ones I get on ff.net.

[personal profile] gamma_orionis 2013-10-21 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
Man, I've found the exact opposite. Maybe it's because I got involved with a few forums on ff.net and have friends there, but I've gotten a pretty decent amount of constructive criticism on ff.net and NONE on Ao3. I don't think I've ever even gotten a review more than ten words on Ao3.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-21 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I have my fics both in AO3 and on F.net. So far, I've never got a single comment or a kudos on AO3, while on F.net I got a decent amount of comments (ranging from silly to insightful). Probably because I write in another language, but still...

Fewer typos distract me more than the confusion between then and than

Yeah, this was nice.

But your secret would have been better if it included my OTP. AO3/ff.net! Seriously, they have the best hate!sex. So hurry up and upload another secret, or else!

(Seriously though, as someone else mentioned above, LJ has the best comments.)

I really can't complain about the reviews I get on FF.net. Most of them are very nice.

The two fics I have on FFN are for such niche markets I seem to mis the vast majority of badly phrased reviews.

From the POV of a reader, I like commenting on AO3 better, because when I have something to say that is longer than "I liked this!" (if that's all I have to say, I'll leave a Kudos), I can get into an open conversation with the writer instead of being shoved into PM if they reply back.

However on a different matter, given the recent "I hate AO3!" secret that was also just plain white text on a black background, I am slightly suspicious of both that and this secret being posted by the same person just to prompt discussion (or wank) about people's opinions of the two archives.
