Not a real issue, IMO

(Anonymous) 2013-10-20 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Sleepy Hollow will probably be too big to be included in next year's Yuletide, so no biggie. And right now, it's so recent that this may increase its popularity (I am not currently watching this show, but it's true that if some Yuletide fics for it attract my attention I may give it a go). This is rarely the case for Yuletide fandoms I am not familiar with: if I already know and like them (about 50-60%), I am overjoyed to see fics, if I am not familiar with them I generally don't bother reading or searching the original material). And I suspect most react similarly?

Regarding Agents of SHIELD, it probably should be folded back into the Avengers/Marvel (all media types) fandom which is humongous and my understanding is that all such fandoms, which can be included under a title including the words 'All Media Types' are not allowed in Yuletide? Has anyone raised the point to the organizers?

Anyway, the show seems to be universally disliked by the public and fandom alike and I cannot think of any really popular fandom with only one season since it is not likely to be renewed. Even if it is renewed - which sounds really unlikely with their current viewing figures - its current fanfic popularity is likely to drop sharply...

If I am wrong on all points, it'll be excluded next year, so again, it's no tragedy.

yeah, the reception of SHIELD has been so lukewarm (because the show is sort of lukewarm too...) that I'm surprised anyone wants fic anyway...

People are probably giving it more of a chance than they normally would because Joss. Also, mediocre shows sometimes end up with a huge fic fandom because of the unmet potential of the characters and the desire to fix things.

TV By the Numbers is predicting definite renewal based on its ratings. (And thank goodness, because I'm a huge fan. (It's not universally disliked, it's just vocally disliked.)

But I don't know about folding it into the All Media Types, because, really, only one main character appears in any other property at all. I didn't nominate it for Yuletide myself, but I was more than happy to include it in my requests.

But yeah, no matter how you slice it, it's not going to be eligible next year. And every year, there are going to be new fandoms that end up being one-year Yuletide fandoms because they're going to get bigger. It's what happens with objective criteria.

Regarding the "All Media Types" thing, naaahhhhh, I don't think that is actually how it works, because I remember last year Transformers got rejected for Yuletide, because it is a fairly large and prolific fandom. Some people were really butthurt about it and decided to nominate every continuity separately and those got accepted, and apparently it was a victory for the forces of justice, which made me facepalm so hard I nearly dented my skull. So, even if nominating a show is stupid and skirts the rules, it will probably make it in.

That doesn't sound too bad, I mean there are some Transformers shows that are vastly different then others in the same franchise, Beast Machines for example is way different then just about anything else in terms of tone and underlying themes, and probably doesn't have much going for it in terms of fics. I am only finding out about Yuletide now but I imagine people who are super huge fans of Beast Machines or Transformers Kiss Players don't have a lot of fic to keep them busy.

If you can imagine people being fans of Beast Machines at all, then you are a more imaginative person than me! :P

(Also, I don't want to imagine fans of Kiss Players keeping busy... /shudder)

2) A fandom that appears small on the surface but that is strongly related to a large fandom may be ruled ineligible. So the manga for Fullmetal Alchemist may appear eligible, but be too strongly connected to the ineligible anime adaptation; The Adventures of Cyclops and Phoenix may seem eligible, but be too strongly connected to the primary X-Men titles.

A bit below:
"- All Media Types" etc

For fandoms "- All Media Types", "& Related Fandoms" and " - Ambiguous Fandom" tags are ineligible. For these you can nominate any specific verison and it will be considered on its own merits. If there is not a canonical tag for that fandom version on AO3, you will have to type the full name in yourself.

Granted, the wording above is a bit unclear (to me: I admit I do not fully understand what that rule means), but the way these official rules make it sound like Agents of SHIELD should be excluded since it is directly related to the Avengers fandom, seeing as how the movie made SHIELD such a big part of the Avengers (in the comics, there is no deriect links between the two organisations, apart from the fact that both the Black Widow and Captain America have worked/sometimes work for SHIELD.

Certainly, the SHIELD organisation is a big part of the Marvel universe, both comics and movies and their various agents have been playing important roles in dozens of Marvel titles for decades.
