I... really don't understand why Yuletide can't be about both the "actual" small fandoms and the popular shows of the moment.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-20 08:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Most likely because Yuletide is for small fandoms that otherwise would get no fic/art/whatever.

not op, but it says right on the tin "annual rare and obscure fandoms fic exchange". If your fandom is not rare or obscure, but instead popular, that seems to not qualify.

and I mean "the popular shows of the moment" the way the OP meant it, not just all the popular shows there are.

Sleepy Hollow has a grand total of 178 fics at AO3 and 46 at ff.net (of all lengths, not adjusted for language or whether it's complete or any of the other factors that limit a fandom's Yuletide participation). IT IS A SMALL FANDOM. Yes, it is exploding right now, but that's because it is new and shiny. It'll level off soon.

Yuletide is about small fandoms. Not what may or may not be a small fandom in a year, but what is a small fandom right now.

And, don't forget that one of the main reasons these three fandoms might have so many offers and requests is the upping of the minimums. Previously you could ask for 3 or 4 requests and had to offer at least 4. Now, it's you can ask for 4-6 and must offer 5. It's not unexpected that people will add in things currently airing with easy to access source material if they need to beef up their offers or requests.

I wouldn't have thought Elementary counted as a small or obscure fandom. Is it?

I wouldn't think so either. Elementary is also in its second season, while Sleepy Hollow and Agents of Shield are new.

I did have this thought about Sleepy Hollow, but it doesn't really bother me, and what are they supposed to do? There's no way to predict how active fandoms will be in a year or so, and even the smallest fandoms can have their deceivingly active little booms. I really doubt SH fandom will die out soon, but still.

There has to be an objective criteria. "Small" or "rare" are subjective.

Number of fics is objective.

None of the newer fandoms currently exploding will qualify next year, whereas the truly small and rare fandoms qualify year after year.

Yeah, but most of the Agents of Shit's fics are just retooled Firefly or Buffy fics because of the Browncoats' unnatural obsession with Whedon and his barefooted girls. The fanbase which is into the show on its own merits and not just because it is Whedon is tiny.

As far as I can tell, Sleepy Hollow is a fusion of refugees from Elementary and Supernatural fandoms and the fic reflects that too.

Lol, I'd rather the Yuletiders have this shit to distract them than put up with the annual invasion of my regularly active small fandom. I am really tired of seeing mediocre fic drooled over every Christmas by people who ignore the much better work posted throughout the year. My fandom might have outgrown Yuletide by next year...it'll be a relief. (It's not even a small fandom by most definitions - there's about a thousand fics for it on FFN. It's just a fandom that moves slow on AO3.)

Not a real issue, IMO

(Anonymous) 2013-10-20 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Sleepy Hollow will probably be too big to be included in next year's Yuletide, so no biggie. And right now, it's so recent that this may increase its popularity (I am not currently watching this show, but it's true that if some Yuletide fics for it attract my attention I may give it a go). This is rarely the case for Yuletide fandoms I am not familiar with: if I already know and like them (about 50-60%), I am overjoyed to see fics, if I am not familiar with them I generally don't bother reading or searching the original material). And I suspect most react similarly?

Regarding Agents of SHIELD, it probably should be folded back into the Avengers/Marvel (all media types) fandom which is humongous and my understanding is that all such fandoms, which can be included under a title including the words 'All Media Types' are not allowed in Yuletide? Has anyone raised the point to the organizers?

Anyway, the show seems to be universally disliked by the public and fandom alike and I cannot think of any really popular fandom with only one season since it is not likely to be renewed. Even if it is renewed - which sounds really unlikely with their current viewing figures - its current fanfic popularity is likely to drop sharply...

If I am wrong on all points, it'll be excluded next year, so again, it's no tragedy.

This is kind of off-topic, but it's weird what is considered to be a small fandom. There were about a 1000 people in my last fandom at is peak, a couple of hundred who were really regularly posting things. It was definitely small in terms of numbers (it qualifies for Yuletide easily), but it was constantly active and buzzing and it was rare a day went by without fic being posted and there would always be someone there to discuss stuff with.

While I'd consider a small fandom to be something that has no or little activity... like, a handful of fics, no discussion groups, no sort of collective fandom at all. That's the sort of fandom that Yuletide is truly great for.

I don't really care what qualifies or not for Yuletide, personally- if people think it's necessary for their fandom, then that's fine imo.

i'm still not convinced sleepy hollow won't go the way of elementary.

a lot of tumblr fans making gifsets that get a considerable number of notes, but not that much actual fic being written.

This reminds me when people were complaining about Tiger & Bunny being allowed into Yuletide because it was a "big" new fandom in expansion.

Now, you see, the fandom is pretty much dead.

I'm not part of Yuletide, not as a participant or as a reader or anything, but I'm finding it interesting to read about how people feel about it.

If I were one of the Yuletide mods, and if I were concerned about this issue, neither of which is true in reality, I'd institute a lower cap for newer canons. Maybe halve the max fics for canons younger than six months old.

I'm less annoyed about the numbers thing. I'm more annoyed they tried to kick out Elementary because they wanted to fold it into the big Sherlock Holmes category. That includes who knows how many Sherlock BBC fics (mine included, I confess). Then there was the fact that we had to fight to get the Elementary Sherlock in, along with the Elementary Watson. Thankfully they let it in because Elementary needs more love. Also, I'm finding I like their reboot of Mycroft - although, if the restaurants turn out to be a front for the British Government, I will not be surprised. At all. I will laugh and laugh hard.

Now, the Elementary writers/creators need to stop trying to drag it to London. We're going into a second episode where London is a factor. LEAVE IT ALONE. I like New York and if you take away Gregson and Bell, I will be highly annoyed. Not regularly annoyed, but highly. :)
