Re: It is not society's job to raise your kids, people
(Anonymous) 2013-10-22 01:00 am (UTC)(link)Chances are they might have been discussing current events/etc with a coworker and the woman and her child may have been within earshot (and knowing some people, the kid might not have even been listening, the parent just wanted to flex their MY BABBBBYYY IS SCARRED FOR LIFE NOW!! muscles).
Yes, this exactly. I was not talking to the kid, I was talking to my coworker. We're constantly discussing current events and especially given how smartphones and the internet are basically everywhere, every time there's been any sort of big event that's happened during business hours we've discussed it. Hell, anytime there's supposed to be a big storm heading our way we're constantly tracking the radar and updating each other. (Yes, things get really boring when we're slow.) In this case the kid happened to be around but was not paying attention (it was only after Mom made a big fuss that Kid even wondered what was said, was told "nothing" and distracted with candy). Honestly, I can't think of a single instance where a customer has been offended by us discussing some current event, except for this particular woman who seems to always be looking for something to complain about. (She once yelled at me because our steps outside were wet after it had just rained and her precious baby could've gotten hurt!!1! when not a single other person mentioned having any issue with the steps, and besides, it's not like I can keep something that's outside from getting wet when it rains.)

(Anonymous) 2013-10-22 09:03 am (UTC)(link)I don't know about you, but I'm perfectly capable of doing my job and talking at the same time. Of course, I also have the lucky job of not generally being around customers, so I get more leeway in what I can and can't say while working.
Still, the idea that one can only talk about work related things at work is naive and ridiculous. Should OP maybe have checked their volume and/or just glanced around to check for customers first? Maybe, but I don't think they were entirely in the wrong just for discussing current events at work.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-22 05:51 am (UTC)(link)How about instead of getting your panties all twisted, you try to keep your workplace discussions a little more professional in front of the customers.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-22 07:21 am (UTC)(link)OP is a human being, not a fucking robot.
