I am not at all a fan of the word lover.

I am also not wild about the word mate (in the soul mate sense). Or SO. And honey, sweetheart, baby, and darling can be really grating in certain contexts.

But if the word fits the character or the situation well, then I probably won’t even notice. It’s only when the word doesn’t fit the character (or my idea of the character) that it truly irritates me.
