"Lover" always feels really distant to me.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-22 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
Disagree. I adore it and it sounds more serious than "girlfriend/boyfriend" as well as the latter sounding pretty ridiculous for any character over about 25.

My dad always called my mom 'lover'. It was very affectionate, believe me.

Sounds like 11 year olds.

To be fair there are plenty of settings and characters for which 'girlfriend/boyfriend' just sounds wrong. If you're writing Helen Magnus screwing the other members of the Five in a sequence in Victorian England, for example. Or Severus Snape in a soppy mood. I think 'lover' can be sweet in the right circumstances.

The more pretentious your writing, the more legit your romance. Apparently.

"Lover" grates on my nerves as well, OP.

The word "lover" doesn't bother me, but that particular sentence does. Bad writing.

Sometimes the word lover works, because of setting/characters/something else that makes it fit, but most of the time I pull a face when I see it used in fic. It's not typically enough to put me off unless it's overused like mad in a story.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-22 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
That word bums me out unless it's between the words meat and pizza.

Totally depends on the characters/setting. In most cases, though, I would totally agree.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-22 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
I actually, kinda, really really like "lover". Though it doesn't fit every situation with romantically involved people. *shrug* to each their own?

My girlfriend used to call me that on occasion. Then I explained that my first thought upon hearing that word is the SNL sketch with Will Ferrell and Rachel Dratch in the hot tub.

I hate this with a passion. I will almost always stop reading a fic if they start using "lover" with any frequency.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-22 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
ugh I can't stand 'lover' in modern settings :| I really wish there were some kind of middle ground between the juvenile 'boyfriend/girlfriend' and the stilted 'lover', like how Japanese has 恋人.

The word just sounds so awkward and out-of-place with most modern-day or futuristic characters, to me. Characters from the past or in medieval fantasy stories using "lover", okay, but Joe Blow at the coffee place, it makes me roll my eyes every time.

I am not at all a fan of the word lover.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-22 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
I am also not wild about the word mate (in the soul mate sense). Or SO. And honey, sweetheart, baby, and darling can be really grating in certain contexts.

But if the word fits the character or the situation well, then I probably won’t even notice. It’s only when the word doesn’t fit the character (or my idea of the character) that it truly irritates me.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-22 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
A scene happened in canon for my fandom and since then, that word has been rendered UNUSABLE, except if you spell it "LOVAHHHHH" and mock the shit out of it.

Which, if you had watched the scene, is the only correct way of reacting, really.

Haha, I don't ever like the word lover because my first introduction to it was through an SNL sketch. So the word is completely ruined for me. Luckily I am very good at not caring too much about single words in a fic.

I see it used a lot in adulterous situations where one or both of the characters are already in a relationship with someone else.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-22 05:30 am (UTC)(link)
I used to think this but then I heard Jeff Buckley's "Lover, You Should Have Come Over" and learned it could be used to heartbreaking effect even in a modern context.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-22 03:37 pm (UTC)(link)
"She kissed her lover" sounds like badfic ala use of epithets.

Other than that, it depends on the era.

I feel awkward about this because my boyfriend frequently refers to me as "lover" or (a bit more often) "beloved", but I also feel like it's frequently awkward in prose. (He uses it primarily because he knows I don't ID as either gender, and "lover" or "beloved" are a better variation than "personfriend", since then people actually know immediately what the relationship is)

idk, I feel like there's definitely contexts where it makes sense. What really bugs me is when it's used either of a non-sexual relationship or of a relationship between a married couple. It bugs me extra-hard because I can't put my finger on why it bugs me so much.

Yeah, it sounds odd

(Anonymous) 2013-10-24 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
I think "lover" somehow wore out its welcome by 1990 or so. It's an awkward word.
