My favorite story by an author isn't necessarily their technical best. (And it doesn't mean I don't like their more technically proficient stories!) Maybe I read it first, maybe I like the plot best, maybe it's of a comfortable length, maybe there's this *one line* that just makes the whole thing memorable for me.
