So, how many more secrets do we have to look forward to with this format? Three down...

Can you at least put a picture behind the text next time? Like, a picture of a doughnut or something. A doughnut or an alligator, maybe? A doughnut eating an alligator? Or, vice versa.

mte

But, hey, the font's red, not white. That's progress.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-21 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Also, OP, as well as putting a picture, I would really appreciate it if you would rewrite those so they're in iambic pentameter

TIA

I was thinking that. "It's them again!"

I guess the OP really likes plain secrets. With lots of text.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-22 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
well at least somebody makes the fucking effort to make these when the amount of secrets dwindle away

I think a lot of writers would say their most well-received fic is definitely not what they would consider their best.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-22 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
I learned a long time ago that content often matters more than quality.

this.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-21 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I know the feeling; the fics of mine that get the most attention are definitely not the ones that I'm most proud of or that I put the most effort into. It's not a writing-quality issue for me, but the fic I have with the most kudos by far was a 2500-word kinkmeme fill that I wrote at 3am one night, not any of the ones I invested months of thought and emotional investment in. *shrug* Fandom likes what it likes, I guess.

Take heart. They love the fic so much that the flaws don't matter.

They might not even see the flaws. There's that thing where your mind knows how a word is spelled, so it doesn't process the misspelling.

Yup

You could always sneak in and fix the errors.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-22 05:56 am (UTC)(link)
Or you could sneak in and change a line or two every day, until it's a completely different fic, and see if/when anyone notices. Guerrilla editing!!1!

I did that. My most popular fic is old and not my best work, but receives tons of traffic. I snuck in an edited a lot of stuff, ironed out some trouble spots and people noticed. Oh man did they notice. "Hey! You altered my favorite part!" Which also happened to be the most ridiculous, hence the change. Editing is good, but make sure you don't trample people's memories by getting overzealous I guess.

I get where you are coming from. For me it's an old fan art on DA. I've improved so much since I drew that, and it embarrasses me to see all the terrible mistakes I've made, but for some reason it's the most popular thing I have up there.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-22 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
Sometimes I'll like a story just because the plot jives with me. Like it has a favorite trope or a really great characterization. It's pretty subjective for a lot of people.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-22 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
You must have done something good, you know. Maybe your plot was original, maybe you wrote an interesting analysis, maybe you used a nice turn of phrase that is really thought provoking, maybe one scene was perfect... Sometimes I'm not looking for perfection, but for emotion in a fic, and your fic may have it.

It's sad to learn when a fic is despised by its creator, you know? There's this fic I liked with a nice plot nobody had used before or after, and that I think has some very nice moments and character development. I wrote that in a post and the author answered "I wish people stop liking my fic, it's awful", and I felt embarrased to like something that I made me genuinely happy. It kinda soured that fic and its author for me, which is a shame, really...

What an ass.

I wish I could find the post in which Ursula Vernon and various commenters said it more eloquently than I could, but she had a great bit about the importance of accepting compliments graciously. Someone liking your work is not about you, it's about them.

I get so sick of people looking at someone else's popular work and going "that doesn't deserve attention as much as MINE does" or "THIS DOESN'T DESERVE ANY ATTENTION"

Yeah yeah I know sometimes it's true....but usually it comes off as douchey and rude.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-22 04:18 am (UTC)(link)
Oh my God, this so so SO much.

There are a bunch of people in my fandom who periodically whines like this. "You should rec other fics other than fic A, for example fics B, C, and D" which casually, are fics written by people of that same faction of the fandom. "I'm sick of people talking about fic A." "Why do people don't talk more/draw fanart/do stuff for fic B like they do for fic A?" "probably people who read fic A aren't capable of appreciating true quality fics" (passive-aggresive comments, my favorites!) They are loud and obnoxious (I happened to block most of them yesterday for this reason btw).

Well, for starters fic A's fame is well deserved. Second, I'm sorry, but always I get this huge vibe of "I want MY fic to be the popular one, not THAT one", thirdly, yeah, your fics are well written, but I've tried to read them and they BORE me out of my skull, while fic A never fails to entertains me. (And I'm not even touching the subject of your nasty online personalities). And let's not forget, maybe you should, you know, start creating comms/discussing/drawing fanart for those other fics if they are as good as you say. People do all these things for fic A for a reason; the fact that your fics fail to cause the same reactions among its readers is also for a reason.

I'm aware not every fandom is like this, but mine sure is. (I know I'm way out of the topic of this secret, but, ahhh, feels so good to let out this annoyance that's been bothering me for months now).

(Anonymous) 2013-10-22 03:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Judging by the way your secret is written, I'd be afraid to read your fanfic.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-22 04:41 pm (UTC)(link)
One of my WORST fics is also one of my most popular fics on ff.net too. It's old and silly, but it has stuff that people like in it. Heck, I still like it, when I'm not cringing about some of the ridiculous crap I shoved in it. It has it's appeal. It's not up to me to decide what people should and shouldn't read. That's why I leave up all my fics, even the embarrassing ones. Some people really love them, so I don't want to take that away because I'm not as into that. *shrugs*

(Anonymous) 2013-10-22 06:34 pm (UTC)(link)
My favorite story by an author isn't necessarily their technical best. (And it doesn't mean I don't like their more technically proficient stories!) Maybe I read it first, maybe I like the plot best, maybe it's of a comfortable length, maybe there's this *one line* that just makes the whole thing memorable for me.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-23 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
you're embarrassed w/ your brain
your HEART was in the story
we don't read for technical perfection but for heart
maybe u learned from this the wrong thing

(Anonymous) 2013-10-25 04:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Not OP, but I needed to hear this. Thank you.
