Wait, so do people in the fandom not know that it's spelled the same no matter the pronunciation, or do they think they're being cute?

I'm not in the fandom, but I am right there with you OP. That is an obnoxious trend.

It LOOKS LIKE the people the OP is commenting on just think they're being cute - at least after the first correction.

But there are a surprising number of people (including one of the directors on the show) who don't realize 'leftenant' is the Commonwealth pronunciation of lieutenant. (Also, apparently in use in the US at the time of the revolution, but I can't say that for sure, it was just mentioned in an article about Ichy's pronunciation someone linked elsewhere.)

Ichabod's dialogue patterns have had me grinning like a fool since the show started, but I still had to look up 'charwoman'. If I didn't watch with closed-captioning, and not having prior experience with that pronunciation, I might have assumed 'leftenant' was another obscure word he was using deliberately, instead of a different pronunciation of the same one.

I bet they thing they're being cute. Writing out non-standard pronunciations phonetically is a bit of a trend lately. It annoys me too.
