Even if we Brits say "left-tenant", we still write lieutenant, dammit. Leftenant just looks weird.

And idk. It just always annoys me when people phonetically write out people's accents.

But people (including those that I'm friends with in fandom) are really defensive about it and get annoyed if people say they don't find it funny or point out that isn't how it's spelled etc etc.

I can totally see misspelling something because that's how the character says it--I do that in rp sometimes. It's part of getting dialect right. But I wouldn't misspell something in descriptive text.

Granted maybe you're taking tumblr too seriously?

It's a pronunciation that the show itself uses to set him apart from the other characters. I really don't see the problem people have with others writing this one word phonetically so as to keep that aspect of his characterization.

You don't pronounce Colonel 'Kul-oh-nell', how hard is it to get that not everything's pronounced phonetically?

Writing the word with an f sound would be fine if it were just a character quirk, but it's how the entirety of the UK says the word - it's as jarring as if UK writers made American characters say stuff like 'toMAYtoes' in the middle of fics.

Eh, if this is about the sairobi art that sparked it...people were getting snotty about something that was supposed to be a fun piece of art.

Misspellings on silly pictures happens all the times. Heck, it happens in writing too. I don't really get out of shape for the same reason that "feels" doesn't bug me--it's expressing a specific idea beyond the original meaning of the word. Usually that idea is pure silliness, but since the internet doesn't have tone and facial expression, and most of us have casual conversations via a series of letters and punctuation, it's interesting to see the written language evolve organically to give us a way to express that silliness and tone with more nuance.


Um, but yeah, in this case, it's also just a very distinctive thing about him, something that sets him apart verbally from everyone else, and something that he says frequently. It would bug me to see it as written dialogue in something that was purely prose, but in conversation or picture, to get an idea across...

That's really what it's all about, isn't it? Getting ideas across.

Whatevs. I've never really spelled it phonetically, but it bugs me that people get so snotty about it.

I don't mind so much because instinctively when I'm reading in my head I pronounce it "loo tenant" so if I'm going along with a story it takes me out of his voice because my American experience just overpowers it. So if you preempt it by spelling it how he pronounces it, I can still hear him. (Just a small advantage.)

But yeah I can understand how purposely spelling words wrong is annoying, just not enough to make me enjoy a show less.

I'm having flashbacks to Stargate Atlantis fandom and the way so many writers insisted on writing out "ZedPM" whenever Rodney was speaking. As someone who shares the Canadian pronunciation, I was so tempted to write out every other character's dialogue as "ZeePM" in my own fics. WE KNOW HOW HE PRONOUNCES IT, HE'S STILL SAYING ZPM, IT IS NOT NEARLY AS CUTE AS YOU THINK IT IS.

Heeeey, so I'm one of the people singled out in the secret and mentioned above. I've explained it twice on Tumblr, so might as well go for a third time here: it has nothing to do with being cute. Comics lack an audio component, so if your joke/point relies on dialect, it may be beneficial to spell it out phonetically. I can't speak for others, but in my case, I didn't think the joke read the same without the phonetic spelling.

I'm sorry I'm ruining the fun, and I mean that sincerely. If it makes you feel better, my fun's been ruined at this point, too.
