Heeeey, so I'm one of the people singled out in the secret and mentioned above. I've explained it twice on Tumblr, so might as well go for a third time here: it has nothing to do with being cute. Comics lack an audio component, so if your joke/point relies on dialect, it may be beneficial to spell it out phonetically. I can't speak for others, but in my case, I didn't think the joke read the same without the phonetic spelling.

I'm sorry I'm ruining the fun, and I mean that sincerely. If it makes you feel better, my fun's been ruined at this point, too.

I think maybe if the joke relies so much on pronunciation to the point where you can't trust the readers to figure it out on their own, maybe it's not a good joke for a medium that relies on text and pictures alone?

To be fair, I haven't seen the comic in question.
