I'll be honest with you, anon: if you want to make fandom connections, you have to be proactive about it. It's just like in real life, no one is going to pay much attention to the person who's just sort of hanging around in the background and not really saying anything. There's no one singular way to get involved in fandom, but if you want to make fandom friends, you have to put the effort in.

You can't sit around waiting for other people to approach you - if you see a fic or a piece of art you like, comment on it! Tell the creator you like it. Join in on conversations or start your own. Do something to show that you're more than just a lurker and people will take note of this.

It really sucks, especially when RL is busy or whatever, but I have noticed that in order to really make connections in fandom, you have to comment a lot to other people--on their fics, on their posts, etc. People generally reciprocate.

My story is the exact opposite of yours, OP. I lurked for years on lots of sites. I lurked here. Then one day I said, "Fuck it" and now because I talk to people, particularly on F!S, I've had my first online friends ever.
