Join in on conversations or start your own. Do something to show that you're more than just a lurker and people will take note of this.

It really sucks, especially when RL is busy or whatever, but I have noticed that in order to really make connections in fandom, you have to comment a lot to other people--on their fics, on their posts, etc. People generally reciprocate.

My story is the exact opposite of yours, OP. I lurked for years on lots of sites. I lurked here. Then one day I said, "Fuck it" and now because I talk to people, particularly on F!S, I've had my first online friends ever.
