i'm not even sure how one 'gets involved' in fandom, as someone who doesn't draw or write/read fanfic.

so far my only idea has been what i've been introduced to by tumblr, which is hordes of 20+ -somethings acting like 12-year-olds. at most i get into discussions.

so.

idk brah

(Anonymous) 2013-10-22 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
tumblr is terrible at fostering that sense of fandom community, so that's not surprising

(Anonymous) 2013-10-22 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
tumblr is the first place i've actually even gotten an idea of how you 'become a part of fandom'.

before tumblr was a thing i didn't know zilch.

There are a lot of different ways to be involved in fandom. You can be a consumer or a producer of any kind of fanwork. Pictures and fanfic are only two types of fanwork. Others include meta, gifsets, icons, screencaps (if for no other reason than so that other people can use them for icons), fandom-themed jokes (what would Jaxom be if he lost his dragon? Ruthless!), fanmixes, remixes or covers of songs from canon, reclists (of any or all other types of fanwork), music videos, fan-composed songs, amigurumi versions of the characters, cosplay, fonts (e.g., if your fandom's canon uses its own script), T-shirts, replicas of props from canon (I'm consistently impressed by every Precursor Orb I see), adaptations of the source material, statements of the form "I like [canon] because [awesome thing about canon]!" and any number of other possible kinds of fanwork that I haven't thought of. And if you want to simply enjoy any of these from other people without creating them yourself, that, too, makes you a fan.

I even did write fanfic! But, it sort of remains there. I get kudos but it doesn't go further.

Man, all my fandom friends I made here. All of them, no joke.

Come to streams and/or pm people. That's what I did.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-22 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh-ho-ho, have I got a gem in store for this weekends stream! Expect big thingsdangly bits! 8D

The universe has been conspiring against me. The one time I was free to make it to a stream this past month, it was noodles birthday and there was none.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-22 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
The problem is that fandom migrated to tumblr which is a very poor platform to have a conversation on.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-22 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I blame tumblr.

I knew people would be complaining about tumblr on this secret, but I just wanted to comment that I feel more like a "part of fandom" since joining tumblr than I have since there were yahoo clubs... remember those? So check out your fandom on tumblr, you never know.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-23 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
it wouldn't be f!s without unfounded tumblr hate :p

(Anonymous) 2013-10-23 05:14 am (UTC)(link)
Except for how there are completely legitimate reasons for some people to hate tumblr so it's not actually unfounded? Look, bully for you, tumblr works for you. There are a lot of people for whom it does the exact opposite and has had a huge negative impact.

I did, except I still can never figure out who is talking to who. When I answer/reblog (because you can't answer on tumblr, you have to rebolg)someone, there's no way for the OP to know that I did it so no one ever answers or joins the discussion. Or, you know, is even aware that I answered.

Basically, on yahoo/LJ you could be part of fandom even if no one knew you. Now? You can't. You need to have followers for anyone to see your stuff. Also, people don't auto-follow those who follow them like on LJ. Tags just don't work well for communities because people don't use them well.

Happy you managed to make it work, but it's a lot harder than just leaving a reply on a post.

This.

It's a format for blogging and image-sharing. It's not a good format for community- or discussion-based interactions at all.

I wouldn't mind something like Tumblr where it's possible to both reblog AND comment, and where you can join communities as well as have a personal page...they basically took away two of the most important features of a fandom site so a lot of people are really disappointed because they can no longer do what they used to be able to do.

...Apart the notes?

(Anonymous) 2013-10-23 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
i feel the same. i try my best. i make graphics on tumblr, even write fic sometimes, follow people and stuff. but i can't seem to make anyone like me or want to fangirl with me :/ all the friends i have now are from previous fandoms, we have nothing much in common anymore. so most of the time i just talk to myself on twitter about the things i like. it sucks feeling cut off from something that (for me anyway) is so important/has been part of my life for so long.

anyway. i'm rambling. HUGS OP.

ALSO

[personal profile] fingalsanteater 2013-10-23 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
I always want to try to be friends with people who make secrets like this because it's like :( I'll be your fandom friend. I will never be creeped out by people sending me messages and wanting to be my friend. Sending a creepy "I think you are cool and I want to talk to you" message is how I met my fiancé, so I know exactly the kinds of relationships one message on the internet can bring you.

I'll be honest with you, anon: if you want to make fandom connections, you have to be proactive about it. It's just like in real life, no one is going to pay much attention to the person who's just sort of hanging around in the background and not really saying anything. There's no one singular way to get involved in fandom, but if you want to make fandom friends, you have to put the effort in.

You can't sit around waiting for other people to approach you - if you see a fic or a piece of art you like, comment on it! Tell the creator you like it. Join in on conversations or start your own. Do something to show that you're more than just a lurker and people will take note of this.

*nods*

It really sucks, especially when RL is busy or whatever, but I have noticed that in order to really make connections in fandom, you have to comment a lot to other people--on their fics, on their posts, etc. People generally reciprocate.

Pretty much this.

My story is the exact opposite of yours, OP. I lurked for years on lots of sites. I lurked here. Then one day I said, "Fuck it" and now because I talk to people, particularly on F!S, I've had my first online friends ever.
