are you me? haha i'm the same way! i don't watch it much either, there are only about three series i like and only two of them i watch frequently. a lot of them did shape my maturity though and made me into a different person(better than i was when i was an otaku thankfully)

i know what you mean though. i thought i was the only person who did this!

31: You know, I'm really tired of people acting like being an otaku is a bad thing. It's not, as long as you're actually interested in Japanese culture and society and sensitive to it, and as long as you can separate fiction and reality. It's no worse than strongly identifying with any other culture or subcuulture. I mean, there's no "omg fans of UK punk rock suck" and wearing a Clash T-shirt and wanting to go to the UK someday doesn't make you an immature moron incapable of identifying with "normality" or a "stupid British wannabe."

Why should anime/manga/jrock be any more of an "instant ticket to tarditry?" Yes, there are culturally and physically offensive otaku. However, to judge ANYONE who identifies as otaku as that is sad. It's like saying the punk rock fan must want to just go start trouble and bash in a few heads, never mind most punk fans aren't violent.

It's sad that people are so judgmental and yes, bigoted (what else do you call hating on someone since they can't make the distinction between stereotype and reality?) but I think we need to get over this idea that non-Japanese otaku are weeaboo and immature, and the only way to be "good" or "cool" or "mature" is to be American/European in every sense of the word.

For example, Yoshiki *has* accomplished a lot more in his life than Toby Keith, has a lot more (varied) talent, and can evoke a much wider range of emotion in his music than anger, patriotism, blind patriotism, and militant patriotism. Yet somehow liking Yoshiki makes me less mature than liking Toby Keith? Fuck that.

As another example: when was the last time an American fiction writer took something that could have been simply played for a forgettable straight action shoot-em-up comic and almost seamlessly weaved character depth and development even for the "bad people," (and were some really bad?) philosophical and sociological debate, exploration of male/male sexuality and relationships, and more into it? And yet I'm supposed to not like this just since the writer happened to be Japanese and wait for an American writer to attempt it?

Yes, there's a lot of crappy product in Japanese pop culture, and a lot of crappy fans. There's also a fair share of diamonds in the rough and a lot of fans who are a lot more fun to be around than judgmental assholes who can't live without harshing someone else's squee.

39: NOZOMUUU!!!!! He's so a Japanese House.

IAWTP

Seriously, it gets downright ridiculous, especially if we consider that Japan, and it's artists mimic a lot of things about our side of the world, but the minute someone in the west mimics something from Japan, here come the weaboo cries. >_>

I mean seriously, I know a Japanese singer (really talented young lady too), who recently got a tan, hair dye, and eye surgery, and now looks quite a bit like an asianified (lolz unexisting word) of Beyonce (who she has stated to be one of her favorite singers), and yet, do we see "Americanophile!" cries? Nooooo, because she looks more american, so it's teh coolness...

(Oooh, are those Sims in your icon? I LOVE TS2. I think it rules. ^_^ I do some moviemaking on the side using it.)

But yeah, it's really getting annoyed. Honestly, the way I see it, the Japanese themselves are the only people who even have a legitimate complaint against even "true weeaboo," since it's their culture that's being abused or misused.

While the rest of us can complain about the behaviors (e.g. fanbrat Japanese, believing that nothing good can come out of America at all, blah blah blah) when they get too extreme, and while we all SHOULD work to educate people about the reality of Japan and Japanese culture, it's really like a flashing red "ethnocentric bigot" sign when someone starts going off on someone else solely to harsh their squee since their squee is over something viewed to be "foreign" or "unreal like MY unreality."

It's my opinion that the entire "weeaboo problem" is very much overblown and self-perpetuating. Yes, everyone's probably had an encounter with someone they might view as overenthusiastic or uninformed.

Yet, by lowering the bar for "weeaboo" to "likes anything Japanese" or even to "wants to be Japanese," we've successfully reassigned an entire class of people consisting of everything from the worst offensive posers to sane, normal people who simply like another nation's pop culture and societal aspects more than their own to the same label, which serves to make the posers worse AND add the only people who might get through to the posers that they ARE being offensive to the people who should be written off.

And you have an excellent point. So much of both our nations' cultures borrow from each other (e.g. mangaka inspired by Disney and DC and Marvel and indie comics, rock stars who admire Western stars as diverse as Beyonce to Marilyn Manson, American comic writers inspired by mangaka and American musicians who've found inspiration in visual kei. . .) it's like a circle, and why can't we celebrate that our cultures are so intertwined?

Okay, such a random lurker here, but the art used in #31 is SO BRILLIANTLY ETHEREAL AND AWESOME. Can anyone tell me the name of the artist?

[identity profile] kurarisa.livejournal.com 2007-10-21 08:42 am (UTC)(link)
OP here XD;
Unfortunately, I've had it for so long (4 years) that I don't remember the artist. I do have a good idea where I can find out, but it'll take me awhile. To compensate though, here's the original photo (http://img141.imageshack.us/img141/4584/kotodamasq9.jpg) ♥

Whoops, that one shrank. Here's the original size (http://img141.imageshack.us/img141/9775/kotodamazk4.jpg)

3) Ooooo, my Axel-kun lighted another house on fire in a fanfic today! He also did crack! I love my Aniki. ♥

11) Like how I found out Axel's english VA is Iruka's VA as well. XD
18) Exactly what I said. After I bought the Axel figure.
23) FUTURAMA SECRET!! God I miss the show. I wish they at least gave us a happy ending. Or any ending, really.
24) Did you know that Portal is /b/'s official favorite game? >3<
26) I think this is a repeat.
27) Doesn't the fruity hat make up for it?

32. Hahaha! Oh my God, can I just say that this is the best secret in the history of man?

Where can I see that show nowadays? Seriously. I was just thinking about it. Duuuuuude. Hella excellent television.

Ahaha. . .

I pretty much lost my (ex)boyfriend to this game. . . and I still didn't manage to quit it myself until about a year later.

See if you can at least convert her to WoW. The leveling is much easier and it's also a hell of a lot less life and soul eating,/i> than RO.

7. I've never understood how Light was a Mary-Sue, he's not perfect in ANY way, he's flawed more than most characters. :/ Matsuda is awesome as hell though.

13. lol.
