Anime.

So, is it racist that I outright refuse to give anime the time of day no matter how many people say such and such title as AMAZING?

Re: Anime.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-24 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think it's racist really unless your avoidance has to do WITH race. I mean for all I know it could just be an aesthetic thing.

Probably not.

Definitely dumb though.

Re: Anime.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-24 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
Not racist, but probably kind of dumb depending on your reasoning.

Re: Anime.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-24 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
Depends on why you're refusing to watch it. If you're not giving it a chance simply because it's Japanese, then yes, that's kinda racist. If you just don't like the sort of animation/storylines/characters in anime, then no.

Re: Anime.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-24 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
I just don't care. What very little bit I've seen and from what's popped up in secrets, I don't like the art, I don't like the way it sounds, maybe there's a good story there, but there are lots of good stories in mediums that don't annoy the everloving out of me. But I guess you could say that boils down to "not liking Japanese style" which is a nicer way of saying "I don't like it because it's Japanese"...

Re: Anime.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-24 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
DA. wellllll.....that does kind of make you sound like an asshole.

art is SO varied. you simply can't say you don't like anime style, because there is no one style. and i don't get what you mean by the way it sounds?

Re: Anime.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-24 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
ntayrt. Exactly. From decade to decade, different genres and just different artists provide a wide range of art styles in anime. I can't see how you could find every single one intolerable.

I'm guessing they mean the high-pitched voices of the Japanese va's and some dubs. At least I hope so.

There is a very big difference in refusing to watch something because you don't like the overall style of the art/characterization/stories and refusing to watch it simply because it's made in Japan. The later is racist.

I do get what you're saying about simply not liking the art, ect. I can not stand the artstyle, layout and typical font and writing/stories of most western comics, but there are a couple I love despite that because the stories are great or they just don't have those annoying things.

You really shouldn't write off all of anime because you don't like the general anime style. Not all the art, ect is like mainstream stuff and there is almost certainly something out there you'd like. It wouldn't hurt to take up a couple suggestions people who know you well make, or just search around for things that are actually to your taste.

Re: Anime.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-24 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
I think it would depend on your reasons?

I mean, as a former huge fan of it, I'll readily admit that the bulk of it is pandering shit and unless the pandering appeals to you there's no point in trying. But writing off the entire genre is kind of strange.

I don't THINK it's racist, but I'd definitely wonder why. I don't follow it anymore but I still watch a few movies/series because there is a lot of good there.

It definitely isn't necessarily. When I was a younger kid I avoided all anime (because I thought it was all like DBZ) but loved other bits of Japanese culture.

Re: Anime.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-24 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
depends. if you don't wanna watch it because you don't like japan, or you think japanese is ugly, or some twat reason like that then yes. otherwise no. you just sound like a boring person instead.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-24 08:08 am (UTC)(link)
They don't like anime, so they're a boring person? Interesting logic.

Not at all! The style's different. You might not like it.

If you've decided all anime is poorly dubbed magical girl stuff that's depressing, though. You should at least check out some Satoshi Kon. Very not-"anime" anime.

Re: Anime.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-24 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
Did you actually hear anyone claiming that's racist, or are you just hyper-paranoid about SJW?

Re: Anime.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-24 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
I think SJW have made some people feel paranoid about EVERYTHING.

The other day I was thinking of making a halloween costume of a PoC character on my favorite show and I instantly thought "omg someone will think I'm racist" and ditched the idea. And then I realized my friends aren't ridiculous.

Re: Anime.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-24 01:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I get worried people will think I'm racist because I refuse to use the term POC. I wince inside everytime I see it. POC is the somewhat racist term over here, 'cause you're blanketing anyone who isn't white into one pile. It's just, URGH god I hate that term but it's America and americans are everywhere in the english speaking internet so just gotta...wince and ignore it.

Not unless you refuse to touch it simply because it's Japanese.

I stayed away from anime for a long time. Attack on Titan was the first one I'd watched in nine years. I liked it, but I'm still hesitant to watch anything else, not much in the way of anime stands out to me.

Re: Anime.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-24 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
I guess it depends on your reasoning? I won't watch any anime but I won't watch any Western animated things either. I realize I'm probably missing out on some good stories that I'd like but I just can't get into anything that isn't live action people.

Re: Anime.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-24 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
Meh. It seems everything is racist nowadays.

I don't like watching things I can't follow by audio (Spanish and English with English subs for clarity), so I don't particularly care for anime.

I know I'm missing out yadda yadda, I may watch something dubbed if my friends annoy me enough (heresy!).

That probably makes me stubborn, boring or closed-minded but not racist.

Re: Anime.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-24 06:38 am (UTC)(link)
A lot of anime is dubbed, though.

Re: Anime.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-24 03:00 pm (UTC)(link)
A lot of anime is dubbed, though.

Do you watch other animated shows?

(Anonymous) 2013-10-24 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
Given the various styles and many genres of anime, if you like shows that are animated by western countries, you'd probably like at least some animes. If you don't like animated shows then not wanting to try anime is perfectly understandable, but I'd understand if people were side-eyeing you for specifically avoiding animated shows from Japan. Trying and disliking is one thing, refusing to try is something else entirely.

Re: Anime.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-24 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
*Racist*? Probably not, unless you're reasoning has something to do with race.

I also don't think it's automatically dumb either, if it's something like "I really don't like animated styles." But...if it's something you might be interested in plot wise, it might seem a little silly to me.

But then again, I'll admit I can usually get over art styles I hate - not everyone can/is willing to.
