Headcanons you have about characters' pasts/childhoods

(Anonymous) 2013-10-25 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
You know how a lot of fictional characters never get a complete biography in canon? Like, large chunks of their childhood or youth is never really described and you could easily make up a lot of very different theories about what took place during the gap(s) without conflicting with canon, just based on little hints or reasoning?

Well, what's some headcanons you've made up for various characters that have gaps in their history? Especially ones that don't fall in line with the most popular fanon assumptions about characters' pasts.

For example, I have a headcanon that when Vernon Dursley found out Petunia's sister was a witch, he really amazed her by not running away or being suspicious of her and being totally supportive. Because I love the idea that terrible people occasionally do really nice things.

I headcanon that CJ Cregg and Toby Ziegler from The West Wing first met and became friends at the 1984 Democratic Convention when they were young volunteers. *is strange*

Teen Wolf, I headcanon that Stiles and Scott met with they were freshman in High School. I think Stiles was always "the weird one" mixed with dealing with his own issues like ADHD, panic attacks, his mom's death, never really had any friends. Then Scott moved to town or switched schools and they were both the lonely nerds in their own different ways and fell in together and hit it off immediately.

Most fanon says they've been friends since birth or pre-school or something.

Pretty sure THE SHOW has said they've been friends since well before high school.

Has it? I couldn't recall. I know the actors have stated their own headcanon, but I couldn't remember anything in the show talking about it.

I'm pretty sure there was a mention in the show at some point where it was said that they've known each other their since childhood and there are also a few quotes where their actors talk about how it was interesting trying to get across that their characters have been friends their whole lives when the show just kind of dives right into the middle of their friendship

I can't recall any instances in the show where they talk about it, do you happen to know any episodes where you think it was mentioned?

And I'm a fan that doesn't take the whole "word of god" thing as canon.

But at the end of the day, I just enjoy my own headcanon. I just like playing around with the characters. :)

Eames was a military brat.

John Watson's (BBC) family was quite poor growing up.

Daryl's (TWD) father was ex-military.

I don't know if these are popular fanon or not.

I headcanon that ACD's Watson from Sherlock Holmes was kind of a delinquent hooligan during most of his teenage years, like, you know, drinking, fighting, sleeping around, getting into trouble and making mayhem with his friends and older brother. Eventually he shaped up and got a medical degree and joined the army, but he's still a really obvious thrill-seeker and gets a kick out of doing improper stuff. However, his older brother never did shape up like he did, hence the backstory in The Sign of Four.

Ooh, I like this one! Actually, I can think of a lot of characters who I'd like to headcanon something similar for. It might be a pattern for me, come to think of it. *eyes comment below*

No this has nothing to do with why I like Rupert Giles so much, why do you ask/

I headcanon that (TOS!verse) Spock got really really depressed when Captain Pike left. Which bothered him a lot, because Vulcans aren't supposed to blah blah blah. Hence why he's so much colder and stiffer in the series proper.

Kevin Ryan (of Castle) is adopted. I have no idea why this is in my head or why I want it to be canon on the show, but there it is.

For some reason I'd really like that to be the B-plot of an episode on the show?

I am firmly convinced that before fighting in Vietnam, Leo McGarry was totally a tough guy rebel type. Possibly with earrings and James Dean-ish-ness and stuff. And maybe a tattoo.

When Shego was a little kid her dad used to sneak her out of the house late at night to watch the stars. It was the only time she didn't feel like she had to compete with anyone else for parental attention.

Drakken has no real memories of his dad, who bailed when he was very young. He's always been conscious of how hard his mom worked to keep him taken care of, and he lies to her because he doesn't want her to feel like she failed him somehow.

Buffy: Giles was raised to be a Watcher; his childhood was super repressive, and this is why he goes all rebellious with Ethan Rayne in his late teens/early twenties.

I was so certain of this i thought it was canon lol

Also we only met his dad, right? I had a strong headcanon that his mum was a watcher too, who didnt outlive her slayer because she was an old fashiined 'sacred calling' watchers rather than the recently in vogue administrative types.

In Danny Phantom I have a headcanon that Tucker Foley always wanted a little sibling , like a brother or a sister. I know it seems weird with his jealousy complex but I can just seem him being lonely and wanting a little sib who can look up to him.

Also I have a headcanon I used in a fanfic I now love that Sam is adopted. I just...love it and I can't explain why.

Also...I've developed the headcanon that Danielle had a lot of resentment for the prime clone. Because he was everything Vlad wanted that she couldn't be. She would sometimes see him watching the prime clone grow...and deep down on an intellectual level, she knew that Vlad wanted that clone more. She believed his lies that he wanted to save her because she wanted to believe it and Vlad was a good actor. He never said that he liked the prime clone more directly TO her just gave little hints and gave her a feeling. The sort of feeling that you don't want to believe but know is true.

She didn't feel terribly bad when the prime clone was destroyed initially afterwards. After all she didn't really like him and didn't want it to work out (that Vlad would be able to finish him) because it meant she would be discarded and brushed aside like trash like the other siblings she had...siblings that she was forced to kill to get Danny's trust (which killed her to do honestly.) She only really understood what the prime clone went through sometime after she was almost melted down by Vlad herself.

Afterward when it hit her she had a massive breakdown, already having dealt with nightmares of the event. What brought her out of it was Valerie talking to her about it and reminded her that Vlad's abuse caused her to have to be competitive against her siblings to live. That night she and Valerie picked out a star to name for him.

There is so much head-canon potential with Danielle. It always makes me sad when people hate on her for being a female clone (which is a stupid thing to hate on her for like hating a rock for being a rock) of Danny or a Mary Sue (which is laughable to me...she's the LEAST powerful half ghost and she's in the show so little that you could skip two episodes and pretend she doesn't exist) .

Also...between Danielle's entire LIFE and Dark Danny's existence Danny Phantom has some DARK shit in it.

The nail in the coffin that made Duke leave home in his teen years was his mother flat-out telling him that she always knew she wasn't cut out for kids and shouldn't have had one.

This is pretty ridiculous, but I have this weird headcanon that when Olivia Benson was in college, she started getting some modeling gigs via her sorority sisters. At first it was just to pay the tuition, because Serena Benson was pissed that she wouldn't go to Columbia and cut her off, but eventually it started messing with her head--ending with her calling Serena to ask for money for a nose job because her agent convinced her she needed it, and besides, it would make her look less like her rapist father and then maybe her mom would love her more. That conversation ends with Serena telling Olivia she's beautiful for the first time in her life, and their relationship improves greatly (until Serena falls off the wagon in season 2).

It was inspired by some really old pictures of Mariska Hargitay floating around tumblr, and a story about her telling off some television exec who told her to get a nose job early in her career. I reeeeaally don't usually conflate actor and character histories like that, but for some reason this one stuck in my head.

Since Aeris and Sephiroth are both canonically lab brats, I have a headcanon that they knew each other as children. Not as any sort of close friends or anything, but they had enough passing contact when their experiment schedules crossed to be able to recognize each other.
