I don't like seeing someone get attacked for what they ship either, even if I don't ship the paring in question myself, let people have their fun.

Shipping in general* is just soooo harmless, I don't know how people get so angry about other people shipping... especially since it's generally a'oh my God, look at this thing young women/girls are super enthusiastic about, let's TEAR THEM DOWN' attitude. 'They need to get a life/hobby/whatever'... like, what's it got to do with them? Are they the shippers' moms? Who even cares if some stranger on the internet is wasting their life (which is shit anyway, most people I know in fandom have a relatively good life balance), honest to God?!

*Of course, when death threats and personal insults toward actors/writers/etc. get involved that's a whole different issue. But that's not about the actual shipping, but their attitudes. As long as you follow the rule "I will not hurt real people over fictional characters", you're usually pretty golden.

Pretty much. As long as the person in question isn't being a dick to others who have done nothing to them or who don't share their tastes, who cares? They like what they like, you like what you like, and that's perfectly fine.

And tbh the people who start the 'if you ship this you're -insert insult here-' (and 'if you don't ship this you're -insert insult here-') stuff don't deserve the attention and wank they so clearly want.

Oh god that 'if you don't ship this you're-' is so bloody arbitrary, like in one fandom I could be a 'homophobe' because I don't ship The Big Slash Pairing, and in another I'd be fine because I do.

Some people look for any excuse to be dicks to others who don't share their opinions or interests. It's hilarious in a sad, sad way.

I can barely believe that kind of shit happens, but I know it has to, I just haven't experienced it. I feel bad for anyone who has. Fandom should be fun, but so often it becomes frustrating instead.

I wish you'd introduce me to these people in fandom who have a relatively good life balance. I can probably count on one hand the people I've known in fandom who can successfully balance life and fandom. Most people I've met are socially inept individuals who can't even fend for themselves and remain shut-ins because that's what Tumblr's taught them to do.
