I think people who attack others for shipping or headcanon are assholes who should be forced to step on a random lego every day.

I approve.

Headcanons or complete breaks with reality? I have had a go at the latter.

If the pairing is notorious for Die For Our Ship and general bashing in itself, then a little side-eyeing is fine IMO. (in b4 "vocal minority!!!" which is rarely actually the case, unless the pair is a canon one)

[personal profile] cbrachyrhynchos 2013-10-25 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I get a bit annoyed by the weekly, "you're anti-gay/bi/pan if you don't make this canon." Just because you read something in subtext doesn't mean the authors or showleaders need to follow you down that particular rabbit hole.

Why do you think obnoxious shippers are rarely a "vocal minority"? You sound very confident.

I love watching shipping wars. IDEGAF.

Although don't know if OP is talking more about downright wars between different ships or rather individual dogpiling. Dogpiling is decidedly less fun.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-25 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I love watching them too!!! I personally find them fascinating however I don't participate in them.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-26 06:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Shipping wars are totally entertaining to watch as long as you're on the sidelines eating popcorn. They're not so fun to engage in.

MICHELLE RODRIGUEZ.

I agree with you.

I don't like seeing someone get attacked for what they ship either, even if I don't ship the paring in question myself, let people have their fun.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-25 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Shipping in general* is just soooo harmless, I don't know how people get so angry about other people shipping... especially since it's generally a'oh my God, look at this thing young women/girls are super enthusiastic about, let's TEAR THEM DOWN' attitude. 'They need to get a life/hobby/whatever'... like, what's it got to do with them? Are they the shippers' moms? Who even cares if some stranger on the internet is wasting their life (which is shit anyway, most people I know in fandom have a relatively good life balance), honest to God?!

*Of course, when death threats and personal insults toward actors/writers/etc. get involved that's a whole different issue. But that's not about the actual shipping, but their attitudes. As long as you follow the rule "I will not hurt real people over fictional characters", you're usually pretty golden.

OT but I love Michelle. <3

(Anonymous) 2013-10-26 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
Eh, it depends for me. If it's just a run-of-the-mill pairing? Then full speed ahead, go for it, have your fun.

But I will call people out for shipping something that is inherently squicky or fucked-up and treating it like it's cute and fluffy and adorable without acknowledging that it's screwed-up (and by that I mean things like abusive relationships, things with major power imbalances, incest, etc.).

By all means, ship what you want. I only have a problem with it when people try to deny that their pairing is anything other than rainbows and kittens.

I feel you OP. People who hate on people for shipping a certain ship are part of the reason fandoms become more stressful than they should be.

Even though there are some pairings I loath with a burning passion of a thousand suns, I won't say anything and I won't go looking for it. If you don't like something just ignore it. Don't be a douchbag and ruin other peoples fun -_-

Same. Especially if they dress up their ship hate in social justice. "omg if you ship this you're racist/homophobic/whatever else buzzword I can come up with!".

Sorry, darling, but just because you stomp your feet and insist that this is not a ship war omg!!! but about whatever cause you want to hide your silly hatred behind doesn't mean that I can't see what you did there.

Fucking haters. Ain't nobody got time for that shit. People should be left the fuck along to ship whatever they want in whatever corner of the internet they happen to do it in. And if you post your ship hate in the ship tag or other designated shipping spaces, yeah, step on a lego and bang your knee on the nearest table's edge.

;__; YES. THIS. Please tell me you're in the Les Mis fandom. We need more people like you.

[personal profile] essexite 2013-10-26 03:10 pm (UTC)(link)
In my experience, people don't get slammed merely for supporting a ship or slash, it's their incredibly obnoxious behavior that gets slammed, followed by martyred cries of "UR A HATER!11!!" or "UR a HOMOPHOBE" if anyone complains about their behavior. See the recent Destiel Tumblir meltdown for evidence.

There are ships that I hate with the passion of ten thousand burning suns, but I don't bitch and moan about it. If I see the ship or any ship-related art, I just scroll by it and move on, it's not hard to not be a dick about it. People who actively go into ship tags or groups for ships just to hate on the ship and the people who ship it are assholes.

I never had to deal with someone harassing me over a ship, but I once knew someone who got bullied because she would write fanfic for a certain homosexual ship and the people who were tormenting her were very homophobic. It was sickening.
