In my experience, people don't get slammed merely for supporting a ship or slash, it's their incredibly obnoxious behavior that gets slammed, followed by martyred cries of "UR A HATER!11!!" or "UR a HOMOPHOBE" if anyone complains about their behavior. See the recent Destiel Tumblir meltdown for evidence.

Yeah. This is exactly what happens. And then some Destiel fan who's actually reasonable sees it and feels like they're being unjustly persecuted, because they always act reasonably but now people are saying that they're awful, so they start getting defensive and talk about how absurd and hater-y the fans of other ships are, which leads to reasonable fans of those ships getting angry about being painted with a broad brush. And then the whole thing is a chain reaction that leads everyone to destruction and everything to be awful.

tl;dr the internet sucks
