Giving NanoWriMo a shot

(Anonymous) 2013-10-26 08:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I've decided to try to do NanoWriMo this year, (I've been too intimidated to join the last few times) in hopes that it will help me actually WRITE a story that's been in in my mind developing since I was 16. I'm really just want to get something so I can start writing and working with. So I can feel like I'm making progress . Every night I go to bed I feel guilt because I haven't DONE anything.

Anybody have tips for NanoWriMo to get to 50,000 words? I have the story outlined by chapter so I have a general idea of where I want to go with it.

Don't go linear. That's the quickest way to get stuck. Since you have the chapters worked out, it's okay to bounce around if you find yourself stuck on one chapter. Stop with that chapter and go to the next.

Oh Thank you so much. That's what I've tried the last several times I tried to write and I always got stuck. I'm an impatient sort who gets anxious to get to the 'good' parts or the parts I look forward to.

I think I could try writing the first draft in outline format divided by chapters.

I'm just a day or two away from finishing a 90k draft that I wrote by working every day on whichever scene I found most interesting. That way I was always working on the most interesting scene. So I second this advice. I don't know if you have or would be interested in trying the Scrivener writing program, but it completely changed the way I write, letting me write non-linearly without getting lost. And it does have a lengthy free trial period. Highly recommended.

Don't worry too much about writing everything perfectly. Forget about little typos and grammatical errors. NaNoWriMo is about getting words down. Editing can be done later.

And even though you have the story outlined, don't be afraid to free its reins a bit. Perhaps you find out 20 000 words in that the story just doesn't fit the way you planned it. Try out something else! Let the character go left instead of right. Let it be rain instead of clear skies. Just play around a bit!

If you have problems getting motivated or just can't get the words out, try out things like Write or Die (http://writeordie.com/) or Written? Kitten! (http://writtenkitten.net/)

And don't stress too much! Whether you get to 50 000 words or not doesn't matter. Try to jot down as many words as you can and at least now you've begun on the story.

Good luck, and don't forget to have fun :)

Thanks.

I'm already coming up with little things that might change in the story as I plan for it.

There has been another thread with some advice. IDK if you saw it or not already, though, but those things might help too?

DO NOT BACKSPACE! NO. I don't care if what you just typed looks like a five year old wrote it, you can fix it later! :|
