The adoration of Jenna Fox by Mary E Pearson, maybe?

Only thing I can think of right now.

Oh and: Etiquette & Espionage by Gail Carriger, though that is more fanasy/steampunky over scifi, but I almost finished the first book and it is pretty cool... (even if I am 10 years older than your niece, I still enjoyed it.) The main character is 14, so it should be okay for an 12 year old.
