Soft sci-fi children's books recs?

(Anonymous) 2013-10-26 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm looking for some soft sci-fi books for my 12 year old niece. She's totally bored with hard sci-fi, but she loves sci-fi books and movies and shows, especially those that tend towards bordering between fantasy and sci-fi. Suggestions?

The Uglies series by Scott Westerfeld is kind of science fiction-ish, not so much fantasy though. Um, that's the only thing that springs to mind right now but if I think of any other recs I'll come back.

The adoration of Jenna Fox by Mary E Pearson, maybe?

Only thing I can think of right now.

Oh and: Etiquette & Espionage by Gail Carriger, though that is more fanasy/steampunky over scifi, but I almost finished the first book and it is pretty cool... (even if I am 10 years older than your niece, I still enjoyed it.) The main character is 14, so it should be okay for an 12 year old.

She might be a little young for these, but I'm going to recommend Charles Stross's "Laundry" series (starts with The Atrocity Archives) anyway, as it's pretty much a mashup of post-cyberpunk and Lovecraft, with a serious amount of spy fiction thrown in. I honestly can't remember if there was any questionable content outside of maybe having to explain what gay people and Nazis are (not the same character, fyi), but it was pretty good. Second book has a lot more borderline-sexual content, but that's expected from a book that has a controlled invocation of the mystical properties of a James Bond movie plot.

I also feel like I should rec Animorphs here, just because I read like 27 of those damn things as a 12-year-old myself. I'll add on if I manage to think of any more.

How about Anne McCaffery - The Ship Who Sang series

I know Elizabeth Moon has written both sci-fi and fantasy, the Vatta's War series is more sci-fi.

Has she read A Wrinkle in Time? That is fantasy but has a lot of the sciencey angle too, if that's something she likes.

Hmm. I know I've read more, because my own preferences are fantasy with a bit of sci-fi, not a really big fan of strict heavier sci-fi stuff, but I'm drawing a blank.

The Bromeliad trilogy by Terry Pratchett (Truckers, Diggers, and Wings) is sci-fi easily mistaken for fantasy at first glance. It's glorious.

McCaffreys Harper Hall trilogy is more YA aimed than her other books

Artemus Fowl series is great

My brothers are her age and theyre nuts about Timothy Zahns Dragonback series, highly recommended ^^

Other anon who mentioned McCaffrey.
Hm, maybe that's the McCaffrey series I was thinking of. It's been awhile since I've read her books.

I haven't read it, but my niece is that age and she enjoyed James Patterson's Maximum Ride YA series. If she's an eager reader, I don't think 12 is too young for The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Universe or Orson Scott Card's Ender's Game.
