I think I know what you mean. When you first enter a fandom, it's all new and shiny and you want to revel in it - and in the smut. But once the shiny wears off a bit, you start to get choosy, and want deeper stories than just Tab A into Slot B, so the smut slowly becomes less important than Plot.

Also, even when you're still reading porn, you get choosy over it, as there are so many factors that can make it good, not-so-good or just plain boring. I find the more technical detail (who put what where), and the less attention to emotion, the more bored I am. I want the emotions and can sacrifice the detail on actions in favour of it.
