It's not uncommon to not care about the smut. I'm there for the characters, but after a while, the sex just gets boring. It doesn't mean I'm dropping out of fandom, just means I skip more sex scenes I guess. Sometimes they just burn you out with their samey same sameness.

It's always been the least interesting aspect of shipping for me. I'm only really interested if it says something about the characters and how they relate to each other, not just generic tab A/slot B word cruft.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-26 08:06 pm (UTC)(link)
smut is boring. i never read smut anymore and it pisses me off how difficult it can be in some fandoms to find anything with ACTUAL PLOT besides one that's only purpose in ending in fucking. i don't think a loss of interest in smut means anything, unless this is something that's happened a lot of times.

OP

As far as I can tell, it eventually happens with every fandom I get into.

Hear, hear.

IDK, it is very logical if you join fandoms because you are invested in the emotional dynamics between the characters. You start losing interest in smut=you start losing interest in the characters' relationships=you start losing interest in the fandom.

You just start seeing fanfic as regular literature instead of a wish fulfillment tool.

OP

(Anonymous) 2013-10-26 08:31 pm (UTC)(link)
But I'm still interested in the characters' relationships after I lose interest in the smut, that's the weird part.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-26 08:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Wish fulfillment can go beyond sex. Or you can easily portray relationships without sex. I don't get your logic.

True, but I was assuming that losing interest in smut was only a symptom of losing interest in emotional dynamics. I was wrong (see the comment above).

This, exactly. And suddenly you barely find any fic up to par.

I am going through that stage right now. Last night I found a fic that a month ago I probably would be all over, but I just kept skimming thinking "ugh, sex sex sex yes let's get on with it and get back to the actual story now please". Think I'm definitely on my way out of my current fandom. Which makes me a bit sad.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-26 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
It is because the teenagers who write the fics think they can get instant credit as a fandom queen bee if they write a smut chapter because ZomG! is sooo grown up and tehs edgy. Best advice to fanficcers is to go out, have a few real relationships, do a bit of intensive characterization fics, and after that, when they think they are now ready to write smut or slash; get a friend to break their fingers because they still aren't ready.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-26 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow. So much negativity and barely even on topic. You've been holding all that in for awhile now haven't you?

Real-life experience doesn't necessarily mean someone's going to get better at writing fictional smut.

There are plenty of published authors out there who are married or in a relationship (and presumably have sex on a regular basis), who write awful sex scenes.

And then there are people who have never had sex at all, who manage to write really amazing sex scenes.

I think it's actually better to read lots and lots of GOOD sex scenes, so as a writer, you can understand what works and what doesn't work.

this

(Anonymous) 2013-10-27 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
agreed, writing porn about tv shows on the internet is serious business, and kids just don't take it seriously enough these days

(Anonymous) 2013-10-27 03:24 am (UTC)(link)
Amen.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-26 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I think over time I become more "choosy" about the fic I read.

And I start noticing fandom trends - especially in smut - where a whole bunch of writers will latch onto an idea. Like a particular AU! or an interpretation of a character.

Eventually I get tired of reading terrible smut, so I try to find the stuff that's well-written.

I think I know what you mean. When you first enter a fandom, it's all new and shiny and you want to revel in it - and in the smut. But once the shiny wears off a bit, you start to get choosy, and want deeper stories than just Tab A into Slot B, so the smut slowly becomes less important than Plot.

Also, even when you're still reading porn, you get choosy over it, as there are so many factors that can make it good, not-so-good or just plain boring. I find the more technical detail (who put what where), and the less attention to emotion, the more bored I am. I want the emotions and can sacrifice the detail on actions in favour of it.

I find the opposite. When I'm really in to a fandom I want to live in a field of fic full of character analysis and world building and plot. I could spend all day talking, writing or reading about a character's reaction to a single, insignificant event in a single episode.

When I start to get bored I'm more likely to seek out smut because the characters don't mean as much to me and all I want is some cheap fap fuel.

I have found that the longer I'm in fandom, the more often I skip the sex scenes in fanfic. I hosted an informal discussion about that on my journal several years ago and discovered that I was not alone and that many of the people on my friends list also routinely skipped reading sex scenes. For me, when I first got into fandom, I had never read erotica of that nature and so the sex scenes were a big draw to me because they were novel. Ten years later, it's not new to me anymore, and I'm more interested in plot and story than anything else.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-27 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
I can't read PWP-style smut at all, it's so boring to me. Way too many writers just don't know how to integrate sex with plot and use it to say something about the characters and their relationship at that particular moment in the story. It's so annoying to be reading an otherwise good, well-characterized fic, then see it all fly out the window as soon as the clothes come off. I don't want to read or write about a couple of generic nobodies flopping against each other, I want to see this interesting ship explored in an interesting, intimate way. There's so much you can think about and do with it.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-27 03:26 am (UTC)(link)
I feel you, OP. The exact same thing happens to me. And then eventually I lose interest in most everything.

You're not alone, OP.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-27 07:55 am (UTC)(link)
It's happened to me with every fandom I've loved.

I came across this "fandom staying power" secret on fail-fandomanon and while it doesn't map 100% to what you said, it might sound familiar. It sure as hell describes me!

TBH I think many of us just get burnout.
