I find the opposite. When I'm really in to a fandom I want to live in a field of fic full of character analysis and world building and plot. I could spend all day talking, writing or reading about a character's reaction to a single, insignificant event in a single episode.

When I start to get bored I'm more likely to seek out smut because the characters don't mean as much to me and all I want is some cheap fap fuel.
