"Every show needs one" tropes

(Anonymous) 2013-10-27 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Inspired by a comment in yesterday's GC that every TV show needs a musical episode, an opinion which I passionately second. What are your episodes that every show should do?

In addition to the musical episode, my heart is in a constant state of crying out for Groundhog Day loops, Rashomon episodes, and bodyswaps.

BODYSWAPS!!!!!!!! Yes. This so much.

I like at least one childhood flashback episode.

Roadtrip episodes. Or trapped in a small space so they tell stories episode.

Bodyswaps are, as far as I'm concerned, the line that divides the decent actors from the great ones. Sure, you can play your character well, and you could probably play another character well, but can you play that other actor playing their character well?

YES SO MUCH

I was a little disappointed they never did that in DP though apparently there was some unofficial comic that did it. :/ I would have preferred an episode.

While Once More With Feeling is my favorite episode of Buffy ever, I really don't like the idea of musical episodes for a lot of shows. It just doesn't fit in my mind. It was a unique thing that I really enjoyed and don't really want more of, if that makes sense.

Bodyswap seems fun but I get too thinky about it and then get creeped out by the idea of someone else in my body and all the private invasive things going on with the trope.

But Groundhog Day loops? Yes please.

Ooh, or going with the BtVS theme, a Zeppo episode. You know, where we're following a side character on their own adventure or regular day and in the background you see all the regular overdramatic shit going down with the main characters.

THE HARMONY EPISODE OF ANGEL WAS THE BEST THING EVER.

Yes to "The Zeppo" episodes! "Love & Monsters" was the episode of DW that dragged me in. I love that trope.

Lower Decks, i.e., an episode/chapter/installment written from the POV of a minor or one-off character observing the main characters.

(It's named after the Star Trek TNG episode from the POV of a group of lowly ensigns who have a limited perspective on the main characters and the mechanics of dealing with the various crises of the week).

I fully support as many things having bodyswaps as possible. But I may be *cough* biased.

Haha, I think I was that anon who said that.

I like your other tropes too.

Also I'm a big sucker for a wordless episode, but they're kind of hard to pull off and pretty rare.

I also like when there's crossdressing and make-overs in things.

an amnesia episode

yeah, yeah, I know that the tv version of amnesia is far from accurate (hell, 50 First Dates is probably one of the more realistic depictions) but I don't care

Is "Baseball Episode" a trope? They don't show up very often (at least in the stuff I watch), but when they do, it makes me ridiculously happy. I don't quite understand it, seeing as how I'm pretty indifferent to the sport.

Animated openings, either all the time or for just one episode

Mirror Universe episodes. Frankly I don't care if it's a true Star Trek evil twin thing or more a "visitors from the World Without Shrimp" thing, but I love seeing what happens to characters when minor details from their pasts or backgrounds are changed.

Seconding the musical episode and the Groundhog Day, too.

I'm just gonna second your comment because time loops, Roshomon episodes and bodyswaps are my favorites.

I'm pretty sure Farscape had all three of those.

AYRT

The Farscape bodyswap episode was actually what made me add that trope to my list. I Netflixed the show a while back and ended up giving up a couple seasons in because I just didn't like most of the actors or characters, but damn Claudia Black made me believe she was Crichton.

An episode with no cuts between scenes or camera angles.

An episode that takes place *entirely* in one room or other confined space.

An episode made to look like it's filmed on a handheld camera, like news footage or a film project or someone's personal recording.

Similarly, an episode made to look like a documentary or an episode of another show, like that COPS episode of The X-Fies.

That COPS episode of X-Files was so well done. I loved it!

I'm totally with you on the musical and Rashomon episodes, and would like to add lower deck and roadtrip episodes to the list.

+1 to all your must-haves (Leverage had the best Rashomon btw, SG1 the best groundhog day, and Eureka the best bodyswap!)

I also love a good 'outsider perspective' ep, and I'll admit to being a sucker for 'finally meeting so-and-so's family'.

Throw in another vote for bodyswap. Best trope.

A disaster episode.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-28 04:43 am (UTC)(link)
I grew up watching soap operas and so, you know, I like an episode where there's some huge disaster - tornado, earthquake, flood, fire, storm, blizzard, whatever, I'm there. I also like the time loops, mirror or alternate universes, confined spaces ones.

There's also unreliable narrator - a character will tell a story about what happened and the audience will see it, but then more information comes to light (usually through another character) and it changes the whole context of what happened.

I don't think that every show needs a musical episode - I like Grey's Anatomy, but the musical episode made me cringe.
