Movie; Sergeant York! "True story of a hillbilly sharpshooter drafted in WW1 despite his claim to be a pacifist, who ends up becoming a war hero."

as for books, 'Rilla of Ingelside', last of the 'Anne of Green Gables' series, shows the homefront perspective of those left behind when the boys go to war. Really really good.
