You are aware that Chess debuted in the West End in 1986 and Broadway in 1988? Its only ever been a musical.

No, I thought it was a completely new musical about the game, and something sort of silly. I've since been informed that it's a older musical from the 80s, and not silly at all.

I agree that the thought of chess as a topic for a whole musical sounds strange and kind of wtf - chess isn't exactly the most thrilling sport to watch on a stage, unless you really like chess. But the chess is only the frame for a lot of Cold War and relationship tension and once you know that, it's not quite as silly anymore.
