... what isn't a musical nowadays?

(Anonymous) 2013-10-28 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Minesweeper, sadly

(Anonymous) 2013-10-28 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't know there was a non-musical version of this.

Same. I thought the Broadway musical was it.....

I am dreading the day when they try to do a Schinder's List musical. And I can just imagine some guy trying to pitch it, "No, it will be all serious. Like Les Mis but with Jews and Nazis!"

Oh, God....

(Anonymous) 2013-10-28 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
That would be The Producers.

As far as I know, there isn't a musical version of Apollo 13.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-28 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
There should be. "Houston, We Have a Problem" will be the signature number.

As long as it's a serious musical. I hope it makes me cry.

If you're looking for comedy, look for "Return to the Forbidden Planet".

That's super cool anon. Thank you for linking it to me.

Unfortunately, one song does not a musical make.

Chess is actually pretty amazing, and is far more about social and political and war-specific issues with Russia, America, etc. It's also a love story but kind of one that's meant not to be admired, just tragic.

Sorry, I can't think of anything else to say.

True, I'm reading the responses and wonder what rock people have been living under since the concept album put "Bangkok" on heavy radio rotation in '84.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-29 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
in '84

I think I see your problem.

No but seriously Chess is awesome but it was never HUGELY popular (the song was, not the musical - I know a bunch of people who like that song and have no clue where it's from) and it was almost 30 years ago. That might be a few years before a lot of people here were even born.

AYRT

Yeah, I stand corrected. I guess I assumed it was one of those random things someone decided to make a musical out of, not something actually pretty serious and deep.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-29 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
If you can, definitely check it out sometime. If you can't see the whole musical at least listen to the music. It conveys the story and its power even without the visual context.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-28 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
This musical is almost 30 years old.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-28 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Nowadays meaning the 1980s *smh*

(Anonymous) 2013-10-28 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
ikr I was born right before this shit came out and I'm hardly a youngin' anymore

AYRT

My mistake. I should have Wikipedia'd first. I stand corrected and better informed. It actually sounds pretty damn good.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-29 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
You are aware that Chess debuted in the West End in 1986 and Broadway in 1988? Its only ever been a musical.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-29 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
No, I thought it was a completely new musical about the game, and something sort of silly. I've since been informed that it's a older musical from the 80s, and not silly at all.
