Alas, I haven't seen ONE fic yet (genderbent or not) that does stick to the canon ending. I'm not even reading them, just the summaries (a few of my DW & LJ flisters are head-over-heels for Bagginshield, can't be avoided) and there isn't a one I've seen that doesn't proudly announce that everybody lives. Don't bother pointing me to ones that do stick to canon, b/c I'm not actually going to read them either. (Although it would make my heart glad to know they exist.)

Actually, some of the best are really angsty ones that do follow canon, just with Bilbo and Thorin in love and/or having sex before they have their falling out.

ppfftt, my favorite fic for this fandom sticks to the canon ending.

That's why I avoid the fics, tbh. I ship it but if you decide to wave a magic wand and make everyone live happily ever after, you ruin the damn story. Fix-it fics are great in moderation, but it's frustrating when they're the norm.
