Are there any pairings you like or is it just Thorin/Bilbo? And no writers, don't stop. I love me some Thorin/Bilbo. I need more art to be honest.

OP

There aren't any pairings I particularly like, although you could probably sell me on various dwarf pairs if you developed them enough. I really don't know why I care about this.

I like this ship, even though it's barely on my radar. It seemed odd to me that the ship would invoke that reaction in you just because shipping characters who don't particularly like each (but who learn to respect each other) other is so common. Do ships like Kirk/Spock (from the new Trek, not TOS) cause the same reaction? Or, is there something about Bilbo and Thorin?

OP

(Anonymous) 2013-10-28 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
It's the don't particularly like each (but who learn to respect each other) thing which lets me understand why people are doing it. Given how the movie put that together, it makes sense that people are doing it. Kirk/Spock I can take or leave.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-29 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
Not the OP

For me a large part of it is simply that it *was* a huge part of my childhood [like...to the point I had the audio tapes of The Hobbit worn out before I learned to read] so...yeah. Hitting my childhood hard there. Particularly since I pretty much thought of them all as, basically, asexual [not that word, but meh.]

Gender-bending doesn't typically work for me with my slash ships but for some reason with Thorin/Bilbo I really like it. *shrugs*

I don't really care about this ship, but man is Richard Armitage hot. He's like the physical embodiment of sex.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-28 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm with you, OP, I can not stand Thorin/Bilbo. I'm not sure what it is, most other pairings I'm not really into don't bother me to the same extent, it really is more like a squick.

I wish there was more Hobbit gen, tbh. The fact that it's like 98% Bagginshield or Fili/Kili just makes me sad.

I don't like it but if other people do I don't care and I've read some good fic with it in it.

You know, you can just not read fic with the pairing in it and leave the fics be. Then you won't be bothered. Also maybe tumblr savior it if it's coming on your dash a lot.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-28 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm calling it right now: Cumberbatch's dragon will not launch the shipping megalith that people think it will.

When do we get the photomanip of Cumbersmaug/Winnebego?

(Anonymous) 2013-10-29 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
I get why people are watching the movie and shipping it. I don't particularly ship it myself, but I'd be up for reading it if most of what I come across wasn't just unbelievably out of character. Bilbo is a middle-aged dude, not some young, delicate flower. And that's if they even let him be a dude; I've never seen so much gender-bending-to-turn-it-into-a-het-ship as in this fandom (and that goes for Bofur/Bilbo too, my movie ship of choice). Which is fine, if it's your thing, but I'm just not interested (genderbent everyone is a different story).

Of course, it's possible I've just been unlucky and only come across the worst that's out there. In any case, blacklisting 'bagginshield' was one of my better decisions.

I didn't get why people were into Richard Armitage to begin with, so with the weird greasy lotr hair and giant feet and general dwarven proportions I really really don't get it. Definitely a squick.

nightscale: Starbolt (Thorin smile)

[personal profile] nightscale 2013-10-29 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
It's not my go-to ship in the fandom but I like it and enjoy reading fic of them sometimes. Even if I didn't like it I wouldn't demand that people stop enjoying it or writing fic.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-29 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
I understand your feelings, OP. I do like this ship, but there are other fairly normal ships that I just don't get and am squicked by and get frustrated with being so frequent its hard to find something else in the fandom. There isn't really a solution other than to just deal, though, because people are allowed to like and ship what they want, and as long as they aren't forcing it on you or mislabeling there isn't much you can do about it. I get the frustration, though.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-29 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
To me this is on the level of Dumbledore/Hermione. I just have no idea why anyone thought of the pairing in the first place. I'm getting the impression it's another case of "i like these two hot dudes; I'll make 'em fuck".

Same here, OP. I can see where the shippers are coming from, but I have the worst knee-jerk reaction to this ship.

Yeah, I can't ship hobbits

(Anonymous) 2013-10-29 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
It's a visual thing, I think, so this pairing squicks me out hardcore. I don't have the same problem with dwarves, though. :/

Alas, I haven't seen ONE fic yet (genderbent or not) that does stick to the canon ending. I'm not even reading them, just the summaries (a few of my DW & LJ flisters are head-over-heels for Bagginshield, can't be avoided) and there isn't a one I've seen that doesn't proudly announce that everybody lives. Don't bother pointing me to ones that do stick to canon, b/c I'm not actually going to read them either. (Although it would make my heart glad to know they exist.)

When they hugged in the movie, I was like "okay, I'm looking for fic." Then I tried to start reading it but it's just too close to my childhood to enjoy.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-29 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
They're nothing now, I admit, but you are going to see it by the end of the third movie (if PJ and co. get it right).

[personal profile] cbrachyrhynchos 2013-10-29 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
I guess if I can swallow everything else about Jackson's Middle Earth shoving Bilbo off-stage for its 20 minutes of soulful aria, I can stomach Bilbo/Thorin, because at this point we're in Bored of the Rings territory.
