My great-grandmother always complained about the women in Westerns cowering in the cabin while the menfolk defended the homestead against... whomever. She talked about living in the frontier she and her sisters knew how to shoot and ride and plow and hitch just as well as the men, because all you had to rely on out their was yourselves. And they did it all in skirts.

Even once the area grew in population, they were still out on a huge farm, so their "new neighbors" were nonetheless miles away.
