as someone who's been an expat for 7 years now, I've amassed a list of really stupid random things I miss from the US (in no particular order):

doorknobs, bubblers (=water fountains), diversity, gallon jugs of milk, that strip of grass between sidewalk and road, grey squirrels, having my dual-heritage accepted and understood, shingles on houses, light switches being on the inside of the bathroom door, friendly eye-contact with strangers, screens on windows, front porches, molasses, blue jays, peanut butter, cardinals, decent weather in the fall, Sousa marches, diners, corn muffins, pumpkin pie, crows on the streetlights, telephone poles, not having my accent second-guessed, contra dancing and city blocks.

Well, colour me surprised. An American misses food, infrastructure and buzzwords.
