What's your favorite weird thing that you love about your country?

(Anonymous) 2013-10-28 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
It can be food, the people, the landscape or whatever. And which country are you from so that we can tie the weirdness to?

I live in the US and it really differs from region to region. I'd say in regards to the South, the weird food I have eaten. Like raccoon stew and snapper turtle soup.

Gonna have to agree that it varies region to region in the US (and probably other large countries, as well).

I think, so, far, you are the only person who has gotten the "weird" part of this question. By the way, what does raccoon stew taste like?

I love fried alligator from the South and taylor ham from New Jersey. Nothing like a taylor ham, egg, and cheese on a hard roll to cure a hangover.

USA I love the size and variety of it. I love that there are deserts, jungle, a rainforest, snow, mountains, plains...there is so much to see in just one country it's amazing.

USA. I love how enthusiastic we can be. Like, other countries are all 'Yay, we're us.' America? We're like, 'FUCK YEAH, 'MERICA! PASS THE FREEDOM FRIES!'

And our Founding Fathers were bamfs who are fun to read about.

Fucking freedom fries. I am so happy that went away.

I moved to Korea from America, and I think it's weird but awesome how people use family terms. Like if I meet an old lady in the bus stop I call her 'Grandmother', and boys younger than me I'm not related to call me 'Noona' (big sister). I just think it's really warm and sweet.

also there is a specific term for non-romantic kiss. A romantic kiss is 'kiss-seu' (Konglish word) and a friendly or familial peck is a 'bbobbo'.

I'm from Australia, and while there's a lot of things I dislike about my country, I also like that we're generally pretty laid back about things like religion and politics.

Also our environment, while terrifying at times, is also AWESOME.

Definitely the landscape. It's so weird and varied. It's become sort of my dream to visit Zion National Park someday.

The fact that we have hockey on our money. No, really. I'm not making this up.

I'm in Belgium...and I know it's cliché, but seriously...the chocolate. The chocolate really is epically awesome.

On another note, while there are a lot of shitty thing here, I really appreciate we have a decent social system which gives us affordable healthcare, unemployment stipends, and other safety net mechanisms for people who just had a bad break.

I like our low taxes for shipping stuff in the U.S. and the conventions.

One thing I love about Norway is our weird dialects!

Like, we have our "big dialects" to say it in a way, and just about everyone can hear if you come Oslo, Bergen, Trondheim, Stavanger or another city. But if you go to more rural areas, it's like they're speaking a completely different language, where even the smallest places have their own way to say things. Take the word "waffle" for example, which can become "vaffel", "raffelkaku" or "rutåtkak" in three different dialects. So if you are a bit dialect savvy (which I am sadly not) you can tell just about where a person is from the moment they open their mouth.

I also love the fact that we have two (fairly similar) written languages (which is also a bit related to the fact that our dialects are so varied)

Missing the point of the question

(Anonymous) 2013-10-29 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
WEIRD THINGS, people! What are your favorite WEIRD things?

For example, you know how in Europe there are fairy and elf this and that. Fairy mounds, elf woods, giant causeways and such. In the US, we have something similar to that, only ours is with the Devil. If there is a weird, supernatural thing in the US, nine times out of ten, it's tied to the Devil or at least to demons. Like The Devil's Tramping Ground, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Devil's_Tramping_Ground. Or The New Jersey Devil, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jersey_Devil. Or The Devil's Chair http://www.weirdus.com/states/florida/cemetery_safari/devils_chair/

US here, but since this can really only go regional: I'm Minnesotan.

I love our weird accents and how we pretend we don't say "uffda" but really do.

UK. The sheer number of regional accents that we have and how they can differ in some places by just going 5 miles down the road.

Also geese as guard dogs.

US, but regionally the South...but uh...Texas, since we're kinda considered our own thing in a lot of ways.

I guess if I had to pick something...I guess how we have a habit of being just different than people expect. Like...for example, Texas was actually the first state to ratify the 19th amendment [AKA: Give women the right to vote], and was actually totally okay with women doing stuff like riding with the Texas Rangers in the mid-late 1800's [Basically women serving with the Texas army - and *not* as camp followers.]

Just how we have a habit having that and a the ton of other stuff we have like that.

The fact that we call the championship for a sports league in which every team but one is from a single country the "world series."

I seriously love it. It's absurd, and I love it. I feel like it's exactly the right attitude to take towards sports - why not do something that's absurd and insupportable and talk yourself up and just have fun with it?

as someone who's been an expat for 7 years now, I've amassed a list of really stupid random things I miss from the US (in no particular order):

doorknobs, bubblers (=water fountains), diversity, gallon jugs of milk, that strip of grass between sidewalk and road, grey squirrels, having my dual-heritage accepted and understood, shingles on houses, light switches being on the inside of the bathroom door, friendly eye-contact with strangers, screens on windows, front porches, molasses, blue jays, peanut butter, cardinals, decent weather in the fall, Sousa marches, diners, corn muffins, pumpkin pie, crows on the streetlights, telephone poles, not having my accent second-guessed, contra dancing and city blocks.
