Reminds me of the method of income production of Crassus, Julius Caesar's best buddy. He became the richest person in Ancient Rome, and possibly still in the history of the world (difficult to calculate that, of course) by 1) owning the only fire brigade in Rome, 2) showing up at houses that were burning down, and then 3) forcing the owner of the house to sell the house to him, for the obviously small value that a burning house was worth, before he would put out the fire.

I guess not much has changed in the past ~2000 years...

Yes, and I also recently heard of someone getting INVOLUNTARILY committed to a mental hospital and having to pay off the (very large) bills for it. So much for helping her- they just put her in debt when she was already having problems.

That's how it is in the US. Hopefully insurance covers it if you have it.

It's how it is in Canada (at least Ontario), too, but ours aren't nearly as expensive ($45, last time I had to take one).

Welcome to America: Where we suck.

Hey, I know a Canadian who had to pay $800 for an ambulance ride in Canada. Her surgery and therapy and follow-up appointments were all covered, but not the ambulance.

I'm guessing they didn't have a health card, cause otherwise I'm pretty sure costs are covered (other than a potential small fee). It's that way in Ontario, at least.

I think she was in Alberta? I don't remember, but it was a skiing accident, so somewhere with mountains, I assume.

Australia too, depending on your state and if you have a healthcare card...

Ambulance cover in Australia is easy to obtain. Either have it as part of your private insurance (on ave. an extra $20 or less) or through the ambulance service itself (around $70 for singles). Even if you don't want to have private cover, I strongly recommend getting ambulance cover because that ride to the hospital is expensive. It's the one cover my parents made sure the family had when we were small, and saved them thousands in ambulance bills (my sister is epileptic; seizures often required an ambulance trip to the hospital).
