[personal profile] supermanda 2013-10-29 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I was in a car accident a few weeks ago and I just found out that I have to pay for the ambulance. ...are you kidding me

$400 and that's such a huge set back considering I have so many things to pay off :,(

Yes, and I also recently heard of someone getting INVOLUNTARILY committed to a mental hospital and having to pay off the (very large) bills for it. So much for helping her- they just put her in debt when she was already having problems.

That's how it is in the US. Hopefully insurance covers it if you have it.

I think what's worse is that it was unexpected. Just a "here ya go" from the pits of hell.

Re: bah, i'm so stressed

(Anonymous) 2013-10-29 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Well...in fairness, if you live in the US, it technically isn't on the government to pay for it.

Granted, it sucks, but it's not really a surprise particularly when you consider how many people decide they "need" one when they really don't*

*Usually because they think they'll get to see a doctor faster.

I live in Canada, hopefully my step mom's insurance plan covers it though (I'm part of it).

That's actually really interesting! See, this is the kind of insight I need to encounter, because $400 sure as hell doesn't just cover gas usage. I still think it sucks though, since I had no control over witnesses calling for me. I did not want to or need to go to the hospital :/

Medical bills are so stressful. I took an ambulance trip last year, and the first thing they asked me was about my insurance, when I was crying in pain.

Good luck *hugs*.

That suuucks. Ambulance rides are crazy expensive. It's really super ridiculous. I've made sure all my friends and family know that if I'm ever in an emergency DO NOT let me take the ambulance there (unless it's literally a life or death thing). ER visits are pricey enough, I don't need that shit on top.

:(

Re: bah, i'm so stressed

[personal profile] supermanda 2013-10-29 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I guess I could consider myself lucky to not have to pay for ER visits themselves, since I live in Canada. But that ambulance ride was totally unnecessary and I was in pretty good shape - I just felt it in my muscles the next morning.

That's a good plan that you have though! I'm glad you do know about ambulance transport fees so you can think ahead ❤ it's tough.

idk your state (eta: ok, now I see your state is... Canada, nm!) or exact circumstances but you should be able to work out a payment arrangement. When my mother had an unexpectedly astronomical hopsital bill we couldn't afford they let her make monthly payments of $50 just to keep it from going to collections and ruining her credit and finances. Again, I don't know your exact circumstances but she didn't even accrue interest.

You might look into local charities or social services that can help with the bill.

I've also heard second hand that if you can scrape together some cash to pay it off upfront sometimes they'll reduce your bill.

If someone else is found to be at fault (eta: for your car accident) you can pursue them legally to pay your bills.

Ugh, I'm so sorry about that!

A few years back, I was in the emergency room for intense abdominal pains. When they told me I needed to have my gallbladder removed, I started crying because I didn't have health insurance. Paying that off wiped out half my savings.

Medical bills (and the lack of affordable health care) fucking suck.

Wow, geeze - that's a huge bill to be faced with unexpectedly. I didn't think you had to pay for ambulances in Canada. :o(

Have you checked that the bill is legit? I've just googled about ambulances in Canada and the majority of fees mentioned were a lot less than $400.

If it is legit, can you contact whoever sent you the bill and make an offer to pay a certain amount per month?

Apart from that, I've got nothing. I hope you get it sorted and feel a lot less stressed soon. ::offers hugs::

ughhh =(

*hugs*

I was in a wreck earlier this year that totaled my car. It was not a fun time. I can't imagine if someone had called an ambulance on me (I really didn't need one). I was so grateful for all the people who came to help. I'm kind of surprised in hindsight that nobody did anything like that, though it might be because I drove my car off the road after the crash so clearly I wasn't unconscious...

Re: bah, i'm so stressed

(Anonymous) 2013-10-30 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
It sucks you were taken off guard like that because someone else called an ambulance for you but, not to offend, I'm not sure why you were surprised by that - ambulance services are a business just like any other and out to get money at the end of the day.

If you're transported by an ambulance you have to pay for the ride, same as any other transportation service, and for the medical care you get from the paramedic and/or emt, same as any other health service.

Also, I know you said in another comment you didn't feel you needed an ambulance, so why didn't you refuse it? Just because an ambulance is called doesn't mean you have to take it, if you sign a waiver saying you're refusing service taking any blame from them if something happens to you, you can just walk away. They can't make you get in. (at least in the USA)

If you refused and they didn't offer any paperwork for you to sign waiving their responsibility so you could go, I'd try looking up your local/state/country policies on that and try challenging the $400 charge.

Sorry to hear you were in a car accident. Hope you're okay.

That really sucks that they're charging you. If you have a health plan or are covered by someone elses, you won't have to pay. Also if you phone either the hospital or fire station (they will hook you up with the right department), you can talk to someone about reducing your ambulance bill. I think you might have to write a letter stating why you can't pay the full amount or why you shouldn't have to.

My mother went to the hospital a month ago. Not only did she get charged almost $800 for one ambulance, she got charged a similar amount for a second ambulance, as apparently they sent two cars out, one of which just sat in the street in front of her house. (She had just canceled her insurance because she was switching to Medicare as she just turned 65, so between the two ambulances, the 10 days in the hospital, the surgery, etc., she is having financial issues. Of course, I suppose it could be worse. If it had happened to me, I don't have any insurance. Sigh...)

Anyway, just saying that I appreciate where you are coming from and empathize with you. I hope you are doing okay after the car accident and you can work out the ambulance situation.

I had problems with medicals bills when I was hospitalized after fainting and having a seizure. I narrowly dodged the ambulance fee, as the fire service showed up, as well as the campus ambulance squad, and they advised me to take the campus ambulance because it was free for students. Which was awesome for them to consider for someone in an altered cognitive state.

Here's something to look into: many health services have some kind of fee forgiveness program, if you are unable to apply for state funded healthcare, have no health insurance of your own, and your income is under a certain amount.

Mine was $900 when it happen. It varies state to state too...Sure makes me secondguess using an ambulance versus dragging myself to the public hospital
