It's not weird. I feel the same.

However, I view it like I do the Bat Tracers from Batman: The Animated Series. Who would make a tracker that's not supposed to be found blink? The bat tracer blinks a bright red light. The animators and storyboard people on the show all admit it doesn't make sense. However, because it was a visual medium it felt better to represent the tracer with a blinking red light. And you know what? They're right. I imagine what they would be like if they were smaller black things and it doesn't speak to me the same way.

So yes, it a completely legitimate grip you have and I agree with you. However, the designers are probably ignoring the logic of it for the same reason the people on Batman made their tracers blink.

Pretty much! In the end it's not about what's logical or realistic. It's about what is most visually satisfying.

Which is honestly a good enough reason for me. Clarity is the first rule of storytelling, always.

Also, it looks cool. That's aces.

Pretty much.

And hey, maybe there's even a way to handwave it.

Actually that was one of the things that sold me in the pilot of Leverage. They plant just such a device, and later the bad guys is like "But I found the bug!" and they're all "Well, you found the bug with the conspicuous blinky red light." because they WANTED the blinky one to be found. Leverage knows when to embrace its tropes and when to avert them. :D

Oh that's actually really cool. I love that kind of stuff.
